5. Slovakia

Slovakia is another country whose citizens demonstrate unhealthy lifestyles. High blood pressure, obesity, smoking, and high blood sugar are the four most common reasons for the death of its residents in 2017. The four factors caused the deaths of 15,433, 8,380, 8,241, and 7,253 people in the country. In 2016, 20.5% of its total residents were reportedly obese, which led to 15.88% of all deaths in the following year. 30.1% of all residents above the age of 15 were tobacco consumers in 2016 and consumed 11.5 liters of pure alcohol the same year. Reportedly, 47.77% of all the deaths that occurred in 2017 were due to some form of heart disease.

4. Hungary

Hungary is the fourth most obese country worldwide. With 26.4% of people being reportedly obese, and 15.36% of all deaths in the country in 2017 being due to obesity, the country is facing an obesity pandemic. Obesity, which took a total of 18,740 lives in the country, follows high blood pressure with a body count of 39,079, smoking with 24,007, and high blood sugar with 21,434 lives lost depicts a grim picture of their lifestyle choices. Heart diseases were attributed to 48.66% of all the deaths in Hungary for the year 2017.

3. Lithuania

Similar to Slovakia, the residents of Lithuania are unhealthy due to their eating, drinking, and smoking habits. 26.3% of its residents were reportedly obese, and obesity contributed to 14.63% of all deaths in 2017. The consumption of pure alcohol on average for every resident over the age of 15 was a huge 15 liters per year. Moreover, 28.8% of its adult population were engaged in tobacco consumption in the year 2016, a figure that places Lithuania among the higher tobacco consuming countries. All these habits contributed to high blood pressure being the number one reason of deaths in the country; it took 14,130 lives in 2017, which were calculated to be 54.41% of all deaths in Lithuania that year.

2. Indonesia

Indonesia is unhealthy primarily due to insufficient healthcare spending in the country. The recorded statistic for healthcare spending as a percentage of GDP in the year 2014 was a measly 2.85%. It is hence no wonder that the country has inadequate healthcare in place. The year 2017 saw 597,994 of Bangladesh’s residents dying due to cardiovascular diseases, 121,488 due to digestive diseases, and 97,005 due to diabetes. Moreover, Indonesia is ranked as one of the countries with the highest number of smokers, as 39.4% of all adults in Indonesia were tobacco users in 2016. Smoking was also one of the most common reasons for deaths in the country; in 2017 it claimed 227,477 lives. Furthermore, 123,753 people in Bangladesh lost their lives due to air pollution, effectively depicting it as one of the countries with the most polluted environments.

1. Niger

Niger is one of the unhealthiest countries due to it having one of the highest maternal mortality ratios worldwide. In 2015, the maternal mortality rate was recorded to be 553 in 100,000 live births. Furthermore, the infant mortality rate in the country is also one of the highest, as 9.1% of all children born alive died before reaching the age of five in 2016. Moreover, Niger is still battling the five most lethal diseases, as 20,620 children died of malaria, 16,939 died of diarrheal diseases, and 14,402 lost their lives to lower respiratory infections in 2016. Neonatal disorders claimed 13,967 lives, while meningitis and tuberculosis caused 7,815 and 5,809 lost lives respectively.
