4. The Flexitarian Diet

Popularity Score: 6

The Flexitarian Diet is a term that was coined more than a decade ago by registered dietitian Dawn Jackson Blatner in her 2009 book, “The Flexitarian Diet: The Mostly Vegetarian Way to Lose Weight, Be Healthier, Prevent Disease and Add Years to Your Life.” At its core, the Flexitarian Diet is a semi-vegetarian diet that focuses on the consumption of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and other plant-based foods, while monitoring the consumption of meat, poultry, fish and other animal-based products. Although there are no set calorie or macronutrient goals in a flexitarian diet, it is still considered a healthy and sustainable approach to eating, as it emphasizes the consumption of nutrient-dense plant-based foods while encouraging the reduced consumption of processed foods, added sugars, and saturated fats.
