12 Countries That Produce the Best Fashion Designers in the World

In this article, we will look at the 12 countries that produce the best fashion designers in the world. We will also discuss key developments and predictions for the fashion industry. If you want to skip our detailed analysis, head straight to the 5 Countries That Produce the Best Fashion Designers in the World

Fashion Industry Outlook For 2024

As outlined in the McKinsey Global Fashion Index, the fashion industry is set for a challenging yet dynamic year in 2024. Despite economic headwinds and technology shifts, the sector displayed resilience in 2022, nearly matching the record economic profit of 2021. However, 2023 was also plagued by persistent challenges, with slow growth in Europe and the United States and the fading performance of China in the luxury segment.

Looking ahead to 2024, the industry is still plagued with uncertainty, with subdued economic growth, inflation, and weakened consumer confidence. McKinsey’s analysis predicts that the global fashion industry will grow from 2 to 4%, with the luxury segment expected to generate the most economic profit, despite a slower pace of growth. Regional variations include a 1 to 3% expansion in the European market, 0 to 2% growth in the nonluxury sector in the United States, and 4 to 6% growth in China. It is also worth noting that China is the country that makes the highest quality clothing

Sustainability: Biggest Fashion Trend of 2024

One of the major fashion trends in 2024 will be the growing importance of sustainability in consumer choices within the apparel sector. In the recently released Brand Finance Apparel 50 2023 report, Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) has retained its position as the world’s most valuable fashion brand with a value of $31.3 billion. This marks the ninth consecutive year that Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) has held the top spot. The report highlights Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE)’s sustained success, attributing it not only to its impressive sustainability efforts, particularly its Move to Zero campaign, but also to its promise to innovation. Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE)’s focus on innovation is confirmed by its 5,610 patent publications between January 2019 and January 2023.

Moreover, Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) is set to release a new addition to its eco-friendly Next Nature collection with the Nike Air Force 1 Low, scheduled for Spring 2024. The women’s exclusive sneaker is a perfect example of sustainability-ensured product by Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) as it uses a minimum of 20% recycled and repurposed materials.

In contrast, fast fashion giants like H&M and Zara have experienced declines in brand value, with H&M seeing a 26% decrease and Zara, owned by Inditex, facing a 15% reduction. The report suggests that these declines are linked to challenges in communicating sustainability practices transparently, citing instances such as H&M’s Conscious Collection’s use of synthetic materials derived from fossil fuels.

On the other hand, LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton SE (OTC:LVMUY), a luxury conglomerate, started on a sustainability journey over 30 years ago, with billionaire founder Bernard Arnault creating an environmental unit. Although initially discreet, LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton SE (OTC:LVMUY) has become more proactive, investing in sustainable brands like Stella McCartney’s and updating its 11-year-old environmental program to LIFE 360. The ambitious plan involves targets such as using 100% renewable energy by 2026 and preserving 12.4 million acres of habitat by 2030. LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton SE (OTC:LVMUY)’s sustainability efforts have earned it an “A” grade for climate action.

Coming back to the significance of fashion designers, it is worth noting that LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton SE (OTC:LVMUY) has extended the contract of Nicolas Ghesquière, the artistic director of women’s collections, for another five years, marking his 10th anniversary with the luxury brand LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton SE (OTC:LVMUY). Under Ghesquière’s creative leadership, annual sales of women’s ready-to-wear at have multiplied by more than five, and sales of shoes and leather goods have grown fourfold.

Speaking of luxury, in 2023, Rihanna wore eye-catching outfits at the Las Vegas Grand Prix. There was also a move towards simpler and easy-to-wear styles, a trend known as quiet luxury. Looking ahead to 2024, some fashion brands are expected to take a quieter and more exclusive approach. Instead of being everywhere with big logos, they will be more selective about who wears their clothes.

Our Methodology

To compile a list of countries that produce the best fashion designers in the world, we utilized the QS World University Rankings for 2023 in art and design. Our approach involved identifying the top 100 art universities in the world and then selecting countries with the highest number of these top institutions. As a result, we have narrowed our selection to the top countries that consistently host leading art and fashion universities. Moreover, we tried to focus on the average salaries of fashion designers around the world, and countries with the highest average salaries were shortlisted. The idea is that high-paying countries, by default, would attract the top quality fashion enthusiasts to their fashion designing careers. We averaged the rankings for both metrics to obtain our final rankings. The list is presented in descending order of average rank.
