10. Chad

Population Growth Rate: 3.05%

Chad’s current fertility rate of 5.35 gives it a place amongst the top 10 countries with the highest population growth. Interestingly, the country has made substantial progress in poverty reduction, evidenced by its below-poverty population moving from 47% in 2011 to 42% in 2018, according to the World Bank.

9. Democratic Republic of Congo

Population Growth Rate: 3.13%

DR Congo’s forecasted population gain by 2100 will be +304%, and when we look at its 3.13% per year population increase, it’s no wonder that Congo is one of the most densely populated countries in Africa.

8. Uganda

Population Growth Rate: 3.22%

Uganda’s fertility rate, as of 2023, is 5.26, 7th highest worldwide. Consequently, the country’s population is on an upward trajectory and is growing at a current pace of 3.22%. Like the prevalent trend in other countries with the highest population growth rates, around 30% of Uganda’s population is also poor, i.e., earning less than $1.77 per day.

7. Benin

Population Growth Rate: 3.31%

Another African country on the list of countries with the highest rates of population growth is Benin, whose current population is a little over 13 million. The country’s under-five death rate is 83.5, as per UNICEF, and around 40% of the population faces extreme poverty.

6. Angola

Population Growth Rate: 3.34%

Despite having an infant mortality rate (the probability of dying between birth and 1 year of age per 1000 lives) of 47.16, Angola’s population growth rate is one of the highest worldwide. Lack of family planning and limited awareness about birth control measures have also contributed to the country’s current population growth rate of 3.34%.

5. Equatorial Guinea

Population Growth Rate: 3.36%

Although Equatorial Guinea is seeing rapid economic growth from oil and gas revenues, around 70% of the country’s people are still poor. Also, according to 2021 estimates, Equatorial Guinea’s fertility rate is 4.27, and the nation’s population growth rate of 3.36% indicates how crowded it is.

4. Burundi

Population Growth Rate: 3.59%

Burundi, a land-locked country in Africa, is amongst the poorest countries in the world, with over 70% population living below the poverty line. But despite the prevailing food insecurity and dwindling economy, the country’s population growth rate of 3.59% is one of the highest in the world. Burundi’s fertility rate was also reported to be 5.08 in 2021, and the country’s under-five mortality rate is 52.6 per 1000 births.

3. Niger

Population Growth Rate: 3.66%

As evidenced by the highest fertility rate of 6.82 in 2021, Niger ranks 3rd amongst countries with the highest rates of population growth. And as expected, a major chunk of the country’s population, 41.8% to be specific, is living in extreme poverty as per World Bank data. According to UNDESA projections, Niger will experience the most substantial population gains by 2100, which will have increased by 578%.

2. South Sudan

Population Growth Rate: 4.78%

Although South Sudan’s under-five mortality rate per 1000 live births is 98.7, its fertility rate of 5.2 makes its population growth rate the 2nd highest in the world. The country’s population is 12 million, and estimates say that about 82% of South Sudanese people face poverty.

1. Syria

Population Growth Rate: 6.39%

Syria comes 1st on the list of countries with the highest rates of population. The country grew 2.54% between 2019 and 2020, resulting in 0.43 million being added to its population. Although Syria’s economic conditions are feeble amidst displacement and political crises, the country’s current population trends have made it the fastest-growing nation. Notably, Syria isn’t projected to be among the biggest populations by 2100, so this rise can be short-lived.
