Nubank (NU): Monzo Talks Add a European Growth Option, but Credit Execution Remains Key

Nu Holdings is reportedly exploring a multibillion-pound acquisition of UK digital bank Monzo, potentially giving the fintech access to millions of new customers and a major new market.

Monzo Talks Add a New Growth Option

Nu Holdings Ltd. (NYSE:NU), NuBank’s parent company, is exploring a potential acquisition of UK digital bank Monzo, giving the Latin American fintech another path toward international expansion as it builds out its existing operations. Monzo is reportedly in early-stage discussions with Nu’s parent company over a potential cash-and-stock transaction valuing the UK fintech at £8 billion to £10 billion.

The deal would give NU access to roughly 15.2 million Monzo customers, £25.7 billion of deposits, and £1.7 billion in revenue, according to Needham analyst Kyle Peterson. Monzo was valued at £4.5 billion in its 2024 secondary fundraising round.

Nubank (NU): Monzo Talks Add a European Growth Option, but Credit Execution Remains Key

Analyst Sees Credit Upside

Peterson believes the transaction could strengthen Nu Holdings Ltd. by adding a scaled and profitable European business while allowing it to expand Monzo’s relatively small lending operation. Monzo had only £2.3 billion of loans against £25.7 billion of deposits, implying a loan-to-deposit ratio of roughly 9%, compared with about 87% for Nu.

The analyst sees room for Nu to provide additional equity and apply its lending models to Monzo’s credit-card and personal-loan businesses. He also points to potential cross-border opportunities among the large Latin American diaspora in the UK, where the company already operates in Brazil, Mexico and Colombia.

Peterson maintained a Buy rating on NU with a $19 price target.

Core Economics Remain Strong

The potential Monzo deal comes as Nu Holdings Ltd. is generating record profitability.

In Q2 2026, gross revenue reached nearly $5.9 billion, up 39% year-over-year, while net income reached $1.1 billion, up 49%. Risk-adjusted net interest margin expanded to 12.4% from 9.5% in the prior quarter, while return on equity reached 33%.

Nu Holdings ended the quarter with 139 million customers globally, $39.4 billion in credit, and $45.3 billion in deposits. It also launched as a full-scale digital bank in Mexico, where it had about 16 million customers as of July.

Expansion Brings New Execution Demands

Nu Holdings Ltd. is simultaneously expanding into the U.S. and introducing Nu Global, adding another layer to its international strategy. Management said building US-specific credit models and data could take 12 to 30 months, while committing to limit the U.S. entry’s impact on its efficiency ratio to 100 basis points.

Credit remains another variable.

The 15-to-90-day NPL ratio improved to 4.8%, but 90-plus-day delinquencies increased 35 basis points to 6.9% in Q2, largely reflecting seasonal migration. Itaú BBA also downgraded NU to Market Perform in September, citing greater medium-term uncertainty around Brazil’s consumer environment.

Hedge Funds Are Less Concentrated

The number of hedge funds bullish on Nu Holdings Ltd. fell from 104 to 92 in Q2, although several major holders increased positions. Lone Pine Capital raised its stake 25%, D1 Capital Partners 72%, Kontiki Capital 20%, and Maverick Capital 59%.

As of September 29, NU trades at a forward P/E of 14.81. Short interest stood at 131.67 million shares as of September 15, up from 129.51 million the prior month, representing 3.50% of the float.

The Real Test Is Scaling Without Diluting Returns

The Monzo discussions add a potentially meaningful European platform to Nu’s expansion strategy, but the transaction remains uncertain. For Nu Holdings Ltd., the broader question is whether it can extend its lending, technology, and customer-acquisition model into new markets while preserving the credit performance, efficiency, and profitability that have driven its recent results.
