Jim Cramer Believes Airbnb (ABNB) “Is Mostly Insulated From AI Competition”

When discussing the recent sell-off across online travel equities during the September 29 episode of Mad Money, Jim Cramer highlighted Airbnb, Inc. (NASDAQ:ABNB) as a standout buying opportunity. He said:

Online travel stocks, listen, those names have sold off periodically since the launch of ChatGPT based on the same general idea that the bots can easily replace them. So far it hasn’t happened, and I’m not sure if Muse changes that. In fact, Expedia has already partnered with Muse to help you plan your vacation.

At the same time, I think Airbnb is mostly insulated from AI competition or even super AI… It’s easier for an agent to book hotels online than it is for them to comb through rental homes and book directly from the owner. Plus, Airbnb sold off dramatically in the last month to the point where I think the stock’s a steal. It may be my absolute fave of the Muse casualties.

Cramer previously suggested staying long on Airbnb, Inc..

Operational Differentiation and Network Insulation

Airbnb, Inc.’s operational model relies on a highly fragmented, non-standardized supply base that inherently resists simple aggregation. Unlike traditional online travel agencies that distribute uniform hotel rooms through centralized global distribution systems, the company offers over 9 million active listings managed directly by private hosts. Standardizing or crawling millions of independent property listings, house rules, pricing algorithms, and individual host communications presents a significant hurdle for autonomous AI booking agents.

In addition, the company’s direct traffic profile remains among the strongest in the digital consumer space, with nearly 90% of traffic coming direct or organically. The direct consumer relationship insulates the business from rising search engine marketing costs while posting a 35% adjusted EBITDA margin in the second quarter

Valuation, Relative Premium, and Downside Risks

Trading at a forward price-to-earnings multiple of roughly 25.4x, Airbnb, Inc. carries a significant valuation premium over the broader sector median of 14.55x. While the premium highlights the company’s superior cash conversion, strong net cash position, and dominant brand mindshare, it also creates a valuation risk if travel demand decelerates. High valuation multiples leave little margin for error if macroeconomic pressures dampen international leisure spending or if regulatory tightening across major metropolitan markets limits inventory growth. If booking growth slows, the stock’s elevated multiple could face compression regardless of its competitive insulation against AI competitors.

Hedge Fund Sentiment and Bearish Positioning

According to Insider Monkey database metrics tracking 1000+ hedge fund portfolios, 75 hedge funds held positions in Airbnb, Inc. at the close of the second quarter, representing a decline from 87 funds in the prior quarter. Among those hedge funds, Harris Associates was the most prominent shareholder with around 18.86 million shares. The short seller activity remains controlled, with short interest standing at 3.50% of the float as of mid-September.

Cramer’s bullish comment rests on the idea that Wall Street has mistakenly treated Airbnb, Inc. like a commoditized hotel booking engine. The company showed in recent quarters that its platform can generate strong free cash flow even during slow consumer environments. However, with the stock maintaining a noticeable premium over traditional travel peers, sustained booking expansion will be required to drive long-term upside from current price levels.
