Is Gemini 4 the Catalyst Alphabet (GOOGL) Needs to Win the AI Race?

Alphabet is nearing the launch of Gemini 4 as Google races to deepen its AI capabilities and sharpen its competitive edge in generative AI and Search.

Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOGL) is approaching another important milestone in its artificial intelligence push. On September 23, Google DeepMind division head Koray Kavukcuoglu confirmed that the company is nearing the launch of Gemini 4.

The new model is expected to feature more advanced artificial intelligence capabilities as the company seeks to strengthen its position in an increasingly competitive generative AI market.

According to Kavukcuoglu, the model has entered the early stages of post-training, a phase focused on refining the model’s performance, reliability, and ability to handle increasingly complex tasks. A strong model could help Google compete better against AI systems from OpenAI and Anthropic. It could also improve search, allowing Google to provide more sophisticated answers and handle increasingly complex queries.

Alphabet Inc. is already seeing benefits from integrating AI into Search. Search and Other revenue increased 17% year over year in the second quarter as users increasingly adopted Google’s unified Search experience across AI Overviews and AI Mode.

Gemini 4 Could Boost Google Cloud

Gemini 4 could also create additional growth opportunities for Google Cloud as businesses increase spending on AI agents, data analytics, and cloud infrastructure.

Gemini’s expanding user base provides Alphabet with another potential avenue for monetization. The company has said Gemini has surpassed 950 million monthly users, creating opportunities to increase revenue through paid AI subscriptions, enterprise services, and developer APIs.

The broader opportunity is therefore not limited to the Gemini model itself. A stronger model could encourage greater adoption across Google’s ecosystem, including Search, Cloud, Workspace, Android, and developer services.

Underlying Risks in Play

The key question for investors is whether Alphabet’s substantial AI investments can translate into stronger financial returns.

Gemini 4 has been described as an ambitious frontier model that could require substantial computing resources. If the new model fails to deliver a meaningful improvement over competing systems from OpenAI, Anthropic, and other AI developers, investors could begin questioning whether Alphabet’s enormous AI infrastructure investments are generating sufficient returns.

AI economics also remains challenging. Models are becoming increasingly capable while lower-cost alternatives are being introduced at a rapid pace. If competing providers deliver comparable reasoning, coding, and agentic capabilities at lower prices, Alphabet could face pressure to reduce API and enterprise-AI pricing. Pricing pressure could make it difficult to monetize the growing AI user base.

At the same time, Alphabet must balance AI infrastructure spending against its traditional businesses. The company is investing heavily in data centers, computing capacity, and AI development while investors remain focused on whether those investments can ultimately generate attractive returns.

Hedge Fund Positioning

Institutional investors continue to maintain significant exposure to Alphabet Inc..

According to Insider Monkey’s database, the number of hedge funds holding Alphabet increased to 275 in the second quarter, up from 265 in the first quarter. Berkshire Hathaway increased its stake by 46% to approximately $28.16 billion, while Fisher Asset Management increased its stake by 3% to roughly $14.29 billion.

Short interest also remains relatively limited. Approximately 87.39 million of Alphabet’s shares were sold short as of September 15, translating to a short interest of 1.49% and suggesting that relatively few investors were positioned for a decline in the stock.

The Verdict

Gemini 4 represents another important test of Alphabet Inc.’s AI strategy. A more capable model could strengthen Google’s position in AI-powered Search, accelerate Google Cloud adoption, expand Gemini’s monetization opportunities, and help Alphabet compete more effectively in agentic AI.

However, the investment case ultimately depends as much on economics as on technological performance. Alphabet will need to demonstrate that rising AI usage can translate into sustainable revenue growth and attractive returns on the massive infrastructure investments required to support its AI ambitions.
