Elbit Systems (ESLT) Gains Over 20% in 2026 as Aerospace Weakness Tests Its Premium Valuation

Elbit Systems Ltd. (NASDAQ:ESLT) has delivered solid returns in 2026, supported by robust demand for its advanced technologies. The stock is already up more than 20% for the year, outperforming the S&P 500 Aerospace & Defense Index, which is down about 9%.

Aerospace Business Slowdown

While the stock has pulled back significantly from all-time highs, it all boils down to weakness in the aerospace business. An unfavorable one-time project mix and lower European sales of key training and simulation systems hurt performance.

The aerospace segment posted a 7.8% year-over-year decline in second-quarter sales to $495 million, as first-half revenue also fell 2.8% versus the same period last year. Nevertheless, losses were partially offset by higher unmanned aerial vehicle sales.

Given that the weakness is not evidence of broader deterioration in Elbit technology, the stock is still one of the best aerospace dividend stocks to buy.

Stock Valuation

Elbit Systems Ltd.’s long-term prospects and growth metrics hinge on the rising global defense spending and demand for advanced military technology. At about $736 a share, the stock trades at a significant premium, with a price-to-earnings multiple of 55x compared to the sector median P/E of 20x.

This means investors are paying more than $50 for every dollar of past annual earnings. While a lower forward P/E of 39 suggests the market expects earnings to increase, the company still needs significant growth to justify the valuation.

The company’s financial performance somewhat justifies the premium. Second-quarter revenue increased 15.9% year over year, while net income rose 38.1%. The company also had about $32 billion in backlog, providing significant visibility into future sales. It has also received a $270 million boost. The fact that 73% of its backlog was attributable to orders outside Israel highlights the company’s ability to benefit from defense spending beyond Israel.

While operating margin increased to 10.4%, continued sales and profitability growth could make the current P/E defensible. Nevertheless, the stock’s price-to-sales ratio of approximately 4.17x is significantly higher than the sector median of 1.77x.

Consequently, investors must weigh strong growth prospects against the risk of multiple compression if earnings miss market expectations.

Cash Flow and Dividend Performance

Elbit Systems Ltd. balance sheet also received a significant boost in the first half of the year. The company generated $517.8 million in operating cash flow, up from $304 million delivered in the same period last year.

The company has continued to strengthen its dividend payouts to $1 a share, taking its annualized payment to $4 a share. The quarterly return has nearly doubled from $0.53 a share as of 2023, underscoring its commitment to shareholder value.

Beyond dividend growth, Elbit Systems’ longer-term share-price performance also offers perspective on how investors have valued its defense technology business over time. See Elbit Systems Ltd. (ESLT): Among Aerospace and Defense Stocks with the Largest 5Y Share Price Returns.

At a share price of approximately $736, an annualized dividend of $4 represents a yield of roughly 0.54%. Whereas the company’s rising distributions are encouraging, the relatively low yield means that its investment appeal depends primarily on earnings growth and potential capital appreciation rather than income generation alone.

Hedge Fund Positioning

Institutional positioning was somewhat less favorable in the second quarter. The number of hedge funds holding stakes dropped to 24 from 27 in the first quarter. Arrowstreet Capital reduced its stake by 34% to $178.98 million, as Heard Capital increased by 21% to $99.27 million.

Short interest remained relatively low at 0.49%, although the number of shares sold short increased to about 229,010 as of September 30, up from 213,06K as of August 31.

Investment Verdict

Elbit Systems Ltd. has several attractive fundamental characteristics, including robust revenue growth, improving operating margins, and rising earnings. Its exposure to advanced defense technologies positions it to benefit from continued military modernization and procurement spending. However, the stock’s premium valuation presents a significant consideration for prospective investors.
