Can Supply Discipline Sustain AI Storage Momentum for Western Digital (WDC)?

Market views on Western Digital Corp. (NASDAQ:WDC) revolve around growing demand for AI storage. Acceleration in hyperscale data center buildouts had supported the stock’s impressive run up until June. However, a broad memory and storage selloff took away much of those valuation gains. Analysts remain bullish on future prospects backed by encouraging supply-demand dynamics across the hard disk drive (HDD) segment, which has seen a pricing surge. See how Western Digital compares with Micron, as both companies are sold out on AI demand.

Long-Term Engagements Could Shape the Outlook

Supply discipline within the industry remains the core strength for Western Digital in the current landscape, where storage is becoming an increasingly significant component of the AI infrastructure growth.

Additionally, the management has been actively pursuing long-term deals through 2031, having recently engaged with one large customer till 2029. It aims to capitalize on its hard-disk offerings that are expected to benefit from capacity expansions in cloud computing. The company’s operational efficiency also remains notable, as it delivered a 37.3% non-GAAP operating margin, compared with a GAAP operating margin of 34.5%, on revenue of $12.92 billion in fiscal 2026. What does the storage boost from Google’s free AI video push imply for Western Digital?

Cyclicality Clouds an Otherwise Strong Story

Cyclicality across target markets is the biggest challenge for Western Digital. The storage segment keeps shifting between tight supply and oversupply. This leads to periods where customers stop purchasing additional inventory. The uncertainty leaves Western Digital with limited visibility into future revenue streams.

The company offers a steadier trajectory compared to peers like Micron. The reported profitability for fiscal 2026 spiked investor interest, but much of it came through one-time gains that are unlikely to reoccur. Following the stock’s impressive run since mid-2025, investors are beginning to wonder how much of the AI-storage momentum has already been priced in. It is also important to note that the company is still negotiating long-term deals. Hence, the prospects should not be accounted for as actual capacity being delivered.

Blistering Rally Accompanied By Rich Expectations

With close to 150% YTD return, Western Digital has stood out as one of the best performers in the market. The 2026 rally has increased the market capitalization to $170.78 billion, as the stock outperformed the broader S&P 500 index by almost 19 times.

The operating performance has driven much of the enthusiasm around Western Digital, as it has yielded around 34.5% GAAP operating margin in fiscal 2026. However, some caution is warranted around the company’s net margin which has clocked in higher at 72.95%. This primarily reflects a $6.50 billion mark-to-market gain on its retained interest in Sandisk, alongside favorable tax treatment, rather than recurring operating profits.

Valuation metrics also do not indicate a very optimistic narrative. The stock trades at a reasonable trailing P/E multiple of 17.60x. But its forward price-to-earnings ratio stands higher at 22.83x, partly reflecting the inflated trailing earnings base caused by one-time gains, rather than necessarily signaling a decline in underlying operating earnings. Institutional Sentiment

Institutional interest across 1,000+ hedge funds tracked by Insider Monkey shows an increase in institutional exposure to the stock. According to 13F filing data, total number of hedge funds that held positions in the stock jumped to 98 by the end of second quarter in 2026, relative to 83 in the previous quarter. Short interest of 5.52% indicates moderate level of active betting against the stock.

With 32.95 million shares, BlackRock is the largest institutional investor owning 9.56% of the outstanding shares. Other notable institutional names include FMR and Vanguard Capital Management, which held 7.54% and 6.53% of outstanding shares, respectively.

Verdict

With a path hinging on how the AI storage demand outplays the pullback, investors will keep an eye on Western Digital’s upcoming first quarter report for fiscal 2027. Focus will be on memory pricing trends and hyperscaler spending. The company’s margins could restore the valuation premium, but any additional demand pullbacks could compress the multiples. For now, disciplined HDD supply and long-term hyperscaler demand support Western Digital’s momentum, although rising competition and already-rich expectations could limit further upside.
