Can Seagate’s (STX) AI-Driven Growth Justify Its Sky-High Expectations?

The impressive rally for Seagate Technology Holdings plc (NASDAQ:STX) carries substantial support from the business fundamentals. The company registered a 48.50% topline growth during its fourth quarter of fiscal 2026, which is a striking figure for a business operating in a cyclical industry. This brings Seagate’s cumulative revenue over the last twelve months to $12.2 billion.

The stock has gained 58.4% during the last 6 months, compared to a 33.88% for Insider Monkey Billionaire Index and 18.18% for S&P 500 ETF (SPY). In fact, Seagate was also part of our recent list of 10 Best AI Stocks to Buy According to Billionaire Stanley Druckenmiller.

Riding the AI Data Wave to New Highs

Profitability metrics leave a strong impression on the investor base. The company stands with a healthy GAAP operating margin of 33.6% for fiscal 2026. Net margin clocked in at 26.1%, fueling an extraordinary return on equity of 371.5%.

The company is anticipating a conducive demand cycle for high-capacity hard drives amid a large volume of AI-generated data created by multimodal outputs, large language models, and generative AI. Hence, the management is betting on high data storage requirements for enterprises, as part of the broader AI developments. With that backdrop, It will be interesting to see how the ongoing AI buildout positions this other memory and storage mega-cap stock to reward investors?

High Leverage, High Reward?

The balance sheet is an area of concern, as the company has a high debt-to-equity ratio of 179.88%, although Seagate reported approximately $3.6 billion in outstanding debt at fiscal year-end. However, the cash generation capacity of the business offers strength. Seagate’s operating cash flow during the trailing twelve months came in at $3.67 billion, while the while company-reported free cash flow reached $3.1 billion.

These figures give enough flexibility to service debt, but a high leverage could magnify risk in a downturn. The company has been aggressively working to bring down its debt, as it recently retired its 2028 notes with $150.97 million in cash and 1.65 million shares. Market sentiment for the stock also appears broadly constructive. The short ratio of 2.57 and a short float of 4.59% indicate modest amount of bearish bets against the stock.

Institutional Sentiment

Based on data tracked across 1,000+ hedge funds by Insider Monkey, institutional sentiment toward the company remains strong. According to 13F filing data, number of smart-money managers with long-term exposure in the stock has been going up. A total of 131 hedge funds held positions by the end of Q2 2026, compared to 93 in Q1 2026.

BlackRock is the one of the largest institutional stakeholder, as per Yahoo Finance database, holding 15.17 million shares as of June 30. This amounts to 6.67% of outstanding shares. Other notable institutional investors include Vanguard Capital Management and State Street Corporation, holding 6.43% and 4.36% of outstanding shares respectively.

The Forward P/E Story

Valuation tells a more nuanced story for Seagate. Trading at a trailing P/E multiple of 66.17x, the stock clearly appears expensive. However, there is a sharp drop in the forward earnings multiple to 25.71x, pointing to analysts’ expectations of earnings to grow rapidly. Such a wide gap implies the investors are currently pricing in sustained momentum, which leaves little room for disappointment if growth slows or hard drive demand softens. Seagate’s AI-driven growth and strong cash flows help support its valuation, but sustained earnings growth will be essential to justify current expectations.
