Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) gives investors exposure to autonomous driving through Zoox, but the investment case still rests on the businesses that pay for that expansion. Cloud computing and retail must earn enough profit to cover heavy spending before robotaxis add anything meaningful to earnings.
At roughly 24 times forward earnings, the question is whether Amazon can turn its growing operations into stronger cash generation while it funds new bets. See where Amazon’s Zoox investment fits among the 10 Best Autonomous Vehicle Stocks to Buy Now.

Zoox Adds Opportunity Before It Adds Proven Earnings
Autonomous ride-hailing could bring in recurring revenue, but running a fleet takes more than good driving software. Vehicles need cleaning, maintenance, charging, and customer support, and enough paying passengers must cover those costs.
Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN)’s July earnings release reported that regulators approved Zoox to charge for rides. That clears a commercial hurdle, but it does not prove profitable operations or a material earnings contribution.
Zoox’s discussion of fleet data and operations shows how much work remains to improve service. Zoox must turn that operational learning into repeat customer demand before it creates financial value.
AWS Provides the Stronger Financial Foundation
Second-quarter sales rose 20% to $200.6 billion, and operating income rose 43% to $27.5 billion. AWS revenue rose 37% to $42.2 billion, and its operating income reached $16.6 billion.
Zoox is one route into this market. Our autonomous driving stocks list compares vehicle developers with suppliers of the underlying technology.
Cloud demand therefore drives near-term earnings more than Zoox does. Profit grew faster than sales, which means Amazon keeps more of each sales dollar after operating expenses.
These results let Amazon fund Zoox without relying on immediate robotaxi profits. But they also show why valuing Amazon mainly around autonomous driving would miss the businesses that produce today’s earnings.
Rising Profit Has Not Prevented a Cash Squeeze
The quarterly filing shows why investment spending is the strongest objection. Operating cash flow rose to $161.4 billion over the twelve months ended June 30, but free cash flow turned negative at $7.6 billion as spending on property and equipment grew.
Free cash flow is the operating cash left after the company’s defined capital spending. The contrast shows that stronger operating performance does not automatically leave more money for shareholders.

Amazon mainly blamed AI investment for the higher spending. Zoox adds another business that must eventually justify the resources it uses, though it did not cause the overall cash flow decline.
Management’s third-quarter operating income outlook of $22.5 billion to $26.5 billion supports continued operating strength. The next test is whether that strength improves cash generation after investment.
The Higher Forward P/E Needs a Different Explanation
Amazon trades at 20.05 times trailing earnings and 23.64 times forward earnings. The forward figure means investors pay about $24 for each $1 of annual profit analysts expect.
The forward multiple is higher, so the usual story of expected earnings growth lowering the P/E does not apply. Amazon reported $53.4 billion of second-quarter non-operating pre-tax income, mostly from its Anthropic investments. That calls for caution in treating trailing reported profit as recurring earnings.
The forward P/E has dropped from 34.01 on June 30, 2025. The price investors assign to forecast earnings has eased while cloud profitability has improved, though the figures alone cannot separate share price moves from forecast revisions.
AI investment also needs physical infrastructure. Our AI power grid stocks list examines companies supplying power equipment for that expansion.
The consumer-discretionary-sector median is 15.40 times forward adjusted earnings, and Amazon’s multiple stays higher. AWS and its wider service businesses support a premium, but neither they nor Zoox make every investment attractive.
Market Sentiment
At the end of Q2 2026, 369 hedge funds held Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN), up from 353 in Q1. Their combined stakes totaled $97.10 billion, up from $77.61 billion. Higher stake values alone do not prove net buying.
Can the Core Business Carry the Investment?
Amazon’s improving cloud profitability supports holding the shares, but negative free cash flow makes a new purchase less compelling at this valuation. Zoox adds potential earnings. A stronger buying case needs operating growth to leave more cash after investment, without counting on investment gains to repeat. Better cash conversion would strengthen the case. Spending that keeps growing faster than usable cash would weaken it. Compare Amazon.com, Inc.
