AbbVie vs. Merck: Which Pharma Stock Offers Better Value?

AbbVie’s immunology business is delivering faster growth, but Merck’s emerging drug portfolio could challenge the case for paying a premium for ABBV.

AbbVie Inc. (NYSE:ABBV) and Merck & Co., Inc. (NYSE:MRK) have something important in common that is important for investors, which is that both must demonstrate that newer medicines can sustain earnings as their established blockbusters face competition. However, the companies are at different stages of that transition, creating an interesting valuation dilemma.

According to Yahoo Finance’s valuation snapshot, AbbVie trades at 16.39 times forward earnings, compared with 15.29 times for Merck. That represents a relatively modest premium for AbbVie, despite a considerable difference in recent revenue growth.

For investors, the question is whether AbbVie’s stronger current performance makes it the more attractive investment, or whether Merck offers greater potential as its newer products expand. But before we get into the comparison, take a look at our ranking of the best healthcare stocks to buy according to hedge funds. Check out the complete list here for more insight into the sector.

Bull Case

AbbVie Inc. (NYSE:ABBV) has already demonstrated that its growth strategy can deliver results beyond Humira. Second-quarter revenue increased 10.2% on a reported basis to $16.99 billion, while adjusted earnings per share climbed 22.9% to $3.65.

Skyrizi and Rinvoq remain central to that performance. The two immunology medicines generated approximately $8.03 billion in combined quarterly revenue, representing a considerable chunk of total sales for the company. Global Skyrizi net revenue increased 24.4% on a reported basis, while Rinvoq grew 24.5%.

These figures are particularly important for investors because AbbVie is generating substantial replacement revenue while Humira sales continue declining. That gives investors evidence of an established commercial transition rather than relying entirely on future drug launches. Read more extensively about AbbVie’s bull and bear case here.

Merck’s growth, on the other hand, has been more moderate. Total worldwide sales in fiscal Q2 2026 increased 5% to $16.6 billion, with Keytruda and Keytruda Qlex generating approximately $8.4 billion, also up 5%. However, Merck has promising growth opportunities outside its leading oncology franchise. Winrevair revenue increased 75% to $588 million, while the company’s Animal Health business sales grew 8% to $1.8 billion.

Merck’s expanding portfolio could gradually reduce its dependence on Keytruda. If newer medicines deliver meaningful revenue contributions, investors could become more confident in its ability to sustain earnings beyond its current blockbuster franchise. Bear Case

The distinction between the two companies becomes more significant when considering revenue concentration. Although AbbVie has successfully expanded Skyrizi and Rinvoq, their combined contribution of nearly half of quarterly revenue creates substantial dependence on continued immunology growth. Any meaningful slowdown in these products would challenge the earnings expectations supporting its valuation.

Merck & Co., Inc. (NYSE:MRK) faces a different problem, with Keytruda and Keytruda Qlex accounting for approximately 50% of second-quarter revenue. With Keytruda’s U.S. loss of exclusivity approaching in 2028, the company must build enough additional revenue to offset potential future pressure on its largest franchise.

There is also uncertainty around how quickly newer medicines can bridge that gap. Winrevair’s rapid growth is encouraging, but its $588 million quarterly contribution remains relatively small compared with Keytruda’s $8.4 billion. Which Stock Offers Better Value?

AbbVie Inc. (NYSE:ABBV) has the stronger near-term growth profile, and its modest forward valuation premium appears understandable given the progress of Skyrizi and Rinvoq. Merck, however, presents an interesting alternative. Its emerging medicines offer opportunities to diversify revenue, although their ability to compensate for future Keytruda competition remains uncertain.

The valuation difference is small enough that investors should focus less on the headline P/E and more on earnings durability. AbbVie offers greater visibility into an already advancing growth transition, while Merck’s investment case depends more heavily on the commercial success of its next generation of medicines.

Ultimately, AbbVie may be able to justify its premium through continued execution. Merck & Co., Inc. (NYSE:MRK), on the other hand, must demonstrate that its growth portfolio can become large enough to support earnings when its most important franchise faces greater competition.
