Abbott Laboratories (NYSE:ABT) delivered strong fiscal Q2 2026 results, beating quarterly estimates and raising its annual profit forecast as robust demand for its cancer diagnostics and medical devices businesses helped ease investor concerns surrounding procedure volumes. Sales for the quarter rose 13% on a reported basis and 4.8% on a comparable basis. Intuitive Surgical (NASDAQ:ISRG) also beat both top- and bottom-line consensus estimates in its fiscal Q2 2026 results, with revenue for the quarter growing 19% to $2.89 billion and adjusted EPS of $2.80 exceeding expectations by $0.30.
The companies present two very different investment stories. Abbott (NYSE:ABT) continues to benefit from the resilience of its diversified healthcare portfolio, while Intuitive Surgical (NASDAQ:ISRG) must convince investors that its premium valuation remains justified as procedure growth normalizes. So, what should investors prefer, consistent growth or premium growth?

Bull Case
Abbott’s (NYSE:ABT) strongest growth engine this quarter came from diagnostics, reinforcing the company’s ability to generate meaningful growth across multiple business segments rather than relying on a single franchise. Its cancer diagnostics business, which was recently integrated through the Exact Sciences buyout, is benefiting from an expanding base that comprises both new and repeat users of the colorectal cancer screening test, Cologuard.
Sales in its diagnostics segment rose 42% to $3.09 billion in fiscal Q2, surpassing the estimate of $3.02 billion, emerging as one of the company’s strongest performers during the quarter. The continued strength in diagnostics is particularly important because it adds another meaningful source of growth alongside Abbott’s (NYSE:ABT) medical device business, making the company’s earnings profile more balanced.
While Abbott’s (NYSE:ABT) investment case is built on diversification, Intuitive Surgical (NASDAQ:ISRG) continues to rely on a very different advantage, which is the durability of its robotic surgery ecosystem. Intuitive Surgical (NASDAQ:ISRG) continues to exhibit strong profitability margins. The gross margin expanding to a healthy 70.0% non-GAAP is a point of optimism for investors, as are strong recurring streams that make up around 85% of the total sales.
Adoption of the company’s newest da Vinci 5 surgical platform is also continuing to accelerate, suggesting hospitals remain willing to invest despite broader macroeconomic uncertainty. The company reported strong system placements of 468 da Vinci units in fiscal Q2, reflecting an 18% year-over-year growth.
Furthermore, Intuitive Surgical’s (NASDAQ:ISRG) business model remains one of its biggest competitive advantages. Approximately 85% of total revenue came from recurring sources during the quarter, providing investors with significant revenue visibility as the installed base continues to grow. That recurring revenue model gives Intuitive (NASDAQ:ISRG) a level of earnings visibility that many medical device companies struggle to replicate, as each new system placement creates a long-term stream of instrument, accessory, and service revenue.
Bear Case
Abbott Laboratories’ (NYSE: ABT) outlook remains encouraging; however, a significant portion of its expected growth acceleration in the second half of 2026 hinges on the successful commercialization of several pipeline products. Management has expressed confidence that sales and earnings growth will accelerate in the second half of 2026. While this outlook is supported by improving momentum across multiple business segments, investors will need to see that acceleration materialize over the coming quarters. Notably, Abbott Laboratories (NYSE:ABT) reaffirmed rather than raised its full-year comparable sales growth guidance of 6.5% to 7.5%, suggesting that management remains prudent despite its strong second-quarter performance.
On the other hand, Intuitive Surgical (NASDAQ:ISRG) disappointed investors despite its strong quarterly results, primarily because of concerns regarding procedure growth. Management did not raise its procedure growth guidance, keeping it intact and expecting 2026 da Vinci procedure growth of 13.5% to 15.5%, with results closer to the midpoint. Intuitive Surgical’s premium valuation may also leave little room for execution missteps or slower-than-expected growth.
Tariffs remain another uncertainty. Management expects current tariffs to remain in place through year-end and warned that additional measures could materially affect margins depending on their scope and the proportion of components sourced or manufactured outside the United States.
What Does Hedge Fund Ownership Say?
Hedge fund ownership for the two stocks provides additional insight into the investment thesis. According to Insider Monkey’s database of 1,022 hedge funds, hedge fund sentiment for the stock has improved moderately from the previous quarter, rising from 71 in fiscal Q4 2025 to 73 in fiscal Q1 2026, suggesting that institutional investors continue to maintain confidence in Abbott Laboratories’ (NYSE:ABT) long-term growth prospects.
Intuitive (NASDAQ:ISRG), on the other hand, saw a drop in its hedge fund ownership from 109 to 103 between the two quarters. Although the changes are modest, institutional positioning appears to have been slightly more favorable toward Abbott (NYSE:ABT) during the quarter.
Which Company Looks Better Positioned?
Abbott (NYSE:ABT) and Intuitive Surgical (NASDAQ:ISRG) represent two very different ways of investing in healthcare. Abbott (NYSE:ABT) offers the stability of a diversified business, with growth spread across diagnostics, medical devices, and nutrition.
Intuitive Surgical (NASDAQ:ISRG), by contrast, remains one of the highest-quality growth stories in MedTech, but its premium valuation leaves investors more sensitive to any signs of slowing procedure growth. As a result, Abbott (NYSE:ABT) may appeal more to investors seeking consistent execution, while Intuitive (NASDAQ:ISRG) could offer greater long-term upside if it continues expanding its installed base and sustaining double-digit procedure growth.
