Williams-Sonoma (WSM) Grew Comparable Brand Revenue While Non-GAAP Operating Margin Fell. Can Demand Restore Operating Leverage?

Williams-Sonoma, Inc. (NYSE:WSM) delivered stronger demand across every major brand in fiscal 2026’s second quarter, but the underlying margin picture did not keep pace. Comparable brand revenue rose 6.2%, accelerating from 3.7% a year earlier, while net revenue increased 6.7% to $1.96 billion. Williams-Sonoma, Inc. (NYSE:WSM) reported a company-defined non-GAAP operating margin of 17.3%, down 60 basis points.

That contrast frames the central question for Williams-Sonoma, Inc. (NYSE:WSM): can healthier demand again translate into margin expansion? GAAP operating margin reached 22.9%, but that figure included a substantial tariff-refund benefit. In calculating company-defined non-GAAP operating income, Williams-Sonoma, Inc. (NYSE:WSM) adjusted for $167.8 million of International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) tariff-refund income, a $47.5 million provision for vendor reimbursements, and a $10 million employee recognition cost. The resulting 17.3% margin provides a clearer measure of underlying performance.

Bull Case

The recovery at Williams-Sonoma, Inc. (NYSE:WSM) was broad. Pottery Barn comparable brand revenue grew 5.1%, West Elm rose 6.4%, Williams Sonoma increased 7.6%, and Pottery Barn Kids and Teen advanced 3.5%. This breadth reduces the risk that the portfolio’s improvement rests on one brand or a narrow product cycle.

Williams-Sonoma, Inc. (NYSE:WSM) also raised fiscal 2026 guidance to net-revenue growth of 4.7% to 7.2% and comparable brand revenue growth of 4.0% to 6.5%. Reported merchandise inventory was only 1% higher year over year. The balance was net of $29.3 million in deferred tariff-refund income recorded as a reduction of inventory.

Williams-Sonoma, Inc. (NYSE:WSM) continued finding efficiencies elsewhere. Supply-chain improvements added 30 basis points to non-GAAP gross margin, while occupancy leverage contributed another 40 basis points. Employment-expense leverage contributed 120 basis points to the improvement in the non-GAAP SG&A rate. After 10-basis-point offsets from both general expenses and advertising, the overall SG&A rate declined 100 basis points.

Williams-Sonoma, Inc. (NYSE:WSM) ended the quarter with approximately $1.03 billion in cash and generated $696 million of operating cash flow during the first half, providing additional financial flexibility.

Bear Case

The principal weakness was merchandise profitability. Williams-Sonoma, Inc. (NYSE:WSM) reported a 160-basis-point decline in non-GAAP gross margin to 45.5%, as lower merchandise margins, primarily reflecting tariff costs, created a 230-basis-point drag. Operating-expense leverage was not enough to overcome that pressure.

First-half operating cash flow included $200.2 million collected from tariff refunds and related interest. More importantly, Williams-Sonoma, Inc. (NYSE:WSM) expects a fiscal 2026 non-GAAP operating margin of 17.8% to 18.2%, above the 16.7% delivered in the first half. That implies a meaningful second-half improvement even though the guidance from Williams-Sonoma, Inc. (NYSE:WSM) assumes existing tariffs and elevated oil prices will persist.

The prior operating-margin outlook from Williams-Sonoma, Inc. (NYSE:WSM) was 17.5% to 18.1%. Although that range was not labeled non-GAAP, it assumed no tariff-refund benefit. The revised range therefore represents a modest improvement in underlying margin expectations rather than an accounting-driven increase.

Hedge Fund Data

The filings available so far reflect positions held before Williams-Sonoma, Inc. (NYSE:WSM) reported fiscal second-quarter 2026 results. Insider Monkey’s database showed 48 hedge funds holding Williams-Sonoma, Inc. (NYSE:WSM) at the end of 2Q2026, up from 39 funds three months earlier.

Conclusion

Demand can help Williams-Sonoma, Inc. (NYSE:WSM) restore margin expansion, but the second quarter did not yet demonstrate that outcome. Williams-Sonoma, Inc. (NYSE:WSM) proved that all major brands can grow and that SG&A can scale efficiently. The remaining test is whether those gains can outweigh tariff and elevated oil-price pressures without relying on refunds. Until non-GAAP gross margin stabilizes and the implied second-half margin recovery appears, stronger sales remain necessary, but not sufficient, for renewed operating leverage.

The $250 Trillion AI Hype is Real. A few years from now, you’ll probably wish you’d bought this stock.

When Jeff Bezos said that one breakthrough technology would shape Amazon’s destiny, even Wall Street’s biggest analysts were caught off guard.

Fast forward a year and Amazon’s new CEO Andy Jassy described generative AI as a “once-in-a-lifetime” technology that is already being used across Amazon to reinvent customer experiences.

At the 8th Future Investment Initiative conference, Elon Musk predicted that by 2040 there would be at least 10 billion humanoid robots, with each priced between $20,000 and $25,000.

Do the math. According to Musk, this technology could be worth $250 trillion by 2040.

Put another way, that’s roughly equal to:

  • 175 Teslas
  • 107 Amazons
  • 140 Metas
  • 84 Googles
  • 65 Microsofts
  • And 55 Nvidias

And here’s the wild part — this $250 trillion wave isn’t tied to one company, but to an entire ecosystem of AI innovators set to reshape the global economy.

It’s a leap so massive, it could reshape how businesses, governments, and consumers operate worldwide.

Even if that $250 trillion figure sounds ambitious, major firms like PwC and McKinsey still see AI unlocking multi-trillion-dollar potential.

How could anything be worth that much?

The answer lies in a breakthrough so powerful it’s redefining how humanity works, learns, and creates.

And this breakthrough has already set off a frenzy among hedge funds and Wall Street’s top investors.

What most investors don’t realize is that one under-owned company holds the key to this $250 trillion revolution.

In fact, Verge argues this company’s supercheap AI technology should concern rivals.

Before I reveal the details, let’s talk about how some of the richest people on the planet are positioning themselves.

  • Bill Gates sees artificial intelligence as the “biggest technological advance in my lifetime,” more transformative than the internet or personal computer, capable of improving healthcare, education, and addressing climate change.
  • Larry Ellison — through Oracle, is spending billions on Nvidia chips and partnering with Cohere to embed generative AI across Oracle’s cloud and apps.
  • Warren Buffett — not known for tech hype — says this breakthrough could have a ‘hugely beneficial social impact.

When billionaires from Silicon Valley to Wall Street line up behind the same idea — you know it’s worth paying attention to.

Even as we admire what Tesla, Nvidia, Alphabet, and Microsoft have built, we believe an even greater opportunity lies elsewhere…

But the real story isn’t Nvidia — it’s a much smaller company quietly improving the critical technology that makes this entire revolution possible.

And judging by what I’m hearing from both Silicon Valley insiders and Wall Street veterans…

This prediction might not be bold at all:

My name is Inan Dogan. I’m the co-founder and Research Director of Insider Monkey. I have an important message for you today.

Since March 2017, my stock picks have returned 16.5% annually. Today, I’ve found an opportunity even bigger than my British American Tobacco call.

Two years ago, Wall Street wrote off British American Tobacco (BTI) as a “melting ice cube.” The stock had crashed 40% from its peak, and consensus said the business was dying.

We looked under the cover and realized they were wrong.

We alerted our subscribers, and BTI returned 90% in just 16 months.

Now if you had invested just $10,000 in BTI in June 2024, you’d be sitting on $19,000 in October 2025.

Today, we have identified a nearly identical pattern in a digital-first giant trading at $3.

While the market panics over a surface-level revenue decline, our PhD-led research shows management has actually surgically cut $100 million in waste to focus on high-margin growth.

This pattern is a hallmark of our 16.5% annual return track record. The current opportunity offers a 400% upside potential—dwarfing even our 90% BTI return.
