Will This BYOD Update Favor Apple Inc. (AAPL)?

The number of companies turning to a bring your own device (BYOD) strategy is on the rise. For this reason, the number of smartphones entering the workforce through employees, as opposed to being employer sponsored, is also increasing.

As this trend continues to take off, it will be interesting to pay attention to which smartphones are most popular among employees. As we have discussed in the past, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is in perfect position to benefit from this trend.

Strategy Analytics recently took a closer look a the surge of BYOD devices in North America and Asia:

“The number of BYOD smartphones entering enterprises through the outlay of employees aiming to boost their own productivity was more than double the volume purchased as corporate assets by enterprises in Q1 2013, according to Strategy Analytics’ latest business smartphone quarterly tracker Global Business Smartphone Quarterly Tracking, Q1 2013. In total, more than 62 million smartphones were purchased in Q1 either by business users, or for business users, accounting for nearly 30 percent of global smartphone sales.”

Apple Inc. (AAPL)This trend is taking off for a variety of reasons, including the fact that most employers agree that it will lead to increased employee productivity. Along with this, it can help the company save money since they don’t have to issue the smartphone. Instead, employees are responsible for their own Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) or other device.

Kevin Burden, Director of Mobility at Strategy Analytics, added some interesting statistics to the conversation:

“Globally, the BYOD trend entered 2013 with more momentum than it ever had in 2012, which was a tremendous year for the movement with close to 100 percent growth. nearly 40 percent increase in the first quarter shows enterprises continue to embrace BYOD and downsides such as increasing internal support costs or losing operator support services from abandoning corporate-liable contracts has had little impact on the growing trend.”

This information shows just how big BYOD has become, as well as how this trend has a positive impact on employers.

It will be interesting to see if Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) continues to dominate this segment, or if another provider, such as BlackBerry, is able to step in and do big things in the future.

BYOD devices are on the rise. Only time will tell if Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) can continue to benefit or will eventually be chased down by the competition. One thing is for sure: the opportunity to succeed is there.
