Why Did Alibaba Group Holding Ltd (BABA) Invest $15 million In Israel Based Venture Capital Fund?

Alibaba Group Holding Ltd (NYSE:BABA) and its CEO Jack Ma is very well known for the aggressive moves and investments. Chinese tech investments in Israel are nothing new, as there was $50 million Chinese investment in 2013, which increased to $300 million in 2014. Alibaba Group Holding Ltd (NYSE:BABA) has already announced earlier this year about the investment in Israel based company Visualead, which works on Barcode technology. Alibaba Group Holding Ltd (NYSE:BABA) had come up with yet another investment in Israel based Jerusalem Venture Partners (JVP). They have made an investment of around $15 million and this will be the first investment of the e-commerce giant in a venture capital fund. WSJ reported Orr Hirschauge talked on Fox Business about Alibaba Group Holding Ltd (NYSE:BABA) big investment in JVP and the reasons behind this investment.

Hirschauge pointed out that JVP excels in cybersecurity and they have cluster of investments in storage and networks. He mentioned that Alibaba Group Holding Ltd (NYSE:BABA) is not very much interested in the cyber security technology, but they are interested in the storage and networks technology of JVP.

He pointed at Alibaba Group Holding Ltd (NYSE:BABA)’s statement about competing with Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) in the cloud space. Hirschauge said that Alibaba Group Holding Ltd (NYSE:BABA) is expanding its wings in cloud space by building a lot of datacenters around the world. But the problem with increasing datacenters is increasing operational cost. Hirschauge thinks that Alibaba Group Holding Ltd (NYSE:BABA) might need a lot of innovation in that sector to bring down the operational cost.

“According to our sources, that is exactly the reason why Alibaba invested in the Jerusalem based Venture Fund. They are looking both for cyber solutions, but more focused on technologies related to datacenters, networking and storage,” Hirschauge said.

JVP’s top investments are in technologies like, Security, Hardware, Enterprise software, Software and semiconductors, most of which might interest the likes of Alibaba Group Holding Ltd (NYSE:BABA).
