WaterBridge (WBI) Raised Guidance Again, So Why Did Shares Slip?

WaterBridge Infrastructure (NYSE:WBI) just posted record quarterly revenue, raised its full-year outlook for the second straight quarter, and closed a wave of acquisitions that doubled its waste management footprint in the Delaware Basin. Yet the stock fell 1.73% around the release. For a produced water infrastructure company riding a wave of Permian drilling activity, that gap between the headline numbers and the market’s reaction is worth digging into.

WaterBridge (WBI) Raised Guidance Again, So Why Did Shares Slip?

Bull Case: A Buildout That Keeps Compounding

The quarter itself was strong on paper. Revenue hit $217.8 million, up 8% sequentially, while adjusted EBITDA climbed to $115.8 million, roughly 12% higher than the first quarter, with margins reaching 53%. Management responded by raising full-year adjusted EBITDA guidance to a range of $435 million to $475 million and volume guidance to 2.55 million to 2.75 million barrels per day. The growth story keeps layering on itself.

WaterBridge closed its acquisition of Ranger Water Midstream, adding 70,000 barrels per day of disposal capacity and a treatment facility sitting right next to its Speedway project, which itself launched on schedule in July. On top of that, the company agreed to buy the 560-acre NDB Landfill and got board approval for a fourth waste facility in the Stateline region, a combination expected to double its total facility count. Longer term, management pointed to its partnership with LandBridge and access to roughly 13.4 million acre-feet of brackish water as a potential entry point into supplying water for data center cooling, a market it framed as a multi-gigawatt opportunity still in its early innings.

Bear Case: The Bill For All That Growth

Funding this expansion is not free. Capital expenditure guidance rose by $100 million to a range of $530 million to $590 million, and total debt stood at $1.636 billion at quarter end, pushing the covenant net leverage ratio to 3.3 times, above the company’s own long-term target of under 3 times. To keep funding the buildout, WaterBridge expanded its revolving credit facility from $500 million to $750 million, with room to grow it to $1 billion. Net income of $14.6 million on $217.8 million of revenue also shows how much of the top line is still being absorbed by growth spending and interest costs rather than reaching the bottom line. The quarterly dividend was set at just $0.05 per share, a modest return of capital while the company prioritizes reinvestment. Speedway Phase 2, one of the bigger future growth levers, has not yet been formally underwritten, leaving a piece of the long-term story still pending confirmation.

Funds Are Buying, Shorts Are Betting Against Them

Hedge fund ownership rose to 29 funds from 27 in the prior quarter, a modest uptick in institutional interest. At the same time, short interest sits at 13.78% of float, a level that points to meaningful organized skepticism about the stock even as funds accumulate positions. That combination suggests investors are split on whether the growth is worth the leverage it takes to fund it.

Growth And Leverage Are Racing Each Other

WaterBridge is expanding on multiple fronts at once, from water disposal to landfills to a potential data center water supply business, and management keeps raising guidance to match. But leverage is running above its own target, capital spending keeps climbing, and the market’s muted reaction suggests investors want to see debt come down before they fully reward the growth. For the expansion to keep paying off, the newly acquired assets need to convert into cash flow fast enough to bring leverage back under 3 times without slowing the buildout underway.
