Apple iPhone Name: Was the Apple iPhone Almost Called Something Else?

Apple Inc (AAPL)Apple iPhone Name: How crazy would it be if the Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone was not known as the iPhone? Over the past few years, this name has become synonymous with the smartphone industry among people all over the world. With that in mind, the Cupertino-based company almost choose another name for the device.

Apple is actually the smart money’s second favorite publicly traded company (see why it’s important to pay attention to hedge fund activity).

The question on the mind of many is this: would the iPhone have sold as many units if it were called something else?

The Los Angeles Times posted a story today noting that the smartphone was almost named the “TelePod.” Looking at this name right now, it sounds downright silly. However, there is no way of knowing whether or not the name would have stuck if Apple would have chose it initially.

Here is what the article has to say:

“Apple Inc.’s former advertising lead Ken Segall told a college marketing class that the Cupertino company considered naming its phone the TelePod because it sounded like a futuristic twist on the word “telephone” and had similarities to Apple’s iPod, which was very popular at the time.”

It is safe to say that the students in the classroom at the University of Arizona were quite surprised by this news. Even more interesting is the fact that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) considered other names as well.

“Segall also said Apple considered some other names, including iPad, which the company eventually used for its tablet instead.”

A couple of the other names were Mobi and TriPod, both of which sound completely ridiculous at this point.

If you want to take a closer look at what Segall had to say to the students, you can see the entire video on YouTube.

This story is one of those interesting tidbits that seem to pop up out of nowhere but really get people thinking.

Do you believe that a smartphone from Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) known as the TriPod, for example, would have performed as well? Share your thoughts in the comment section below.
