Country: United States

Larry Ellison is a serial entrepreneur and founder of the second-largest software company in the world Oracle (NYSE: ORCL) which he founded in 1977. In the mid-1990s, Ellison saw a chance to compete with Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ: MSFT) by developing a cheap alternative to desktop PC called a Network Computer (NC). Ellison’s premature cloud computing venture did not thrive as Microsoft’s Windows operating system kept winning the desktop market. In the 2000s, Ellison began Oracle’s aggressive strategy of purchasing rival software companies such as PeopleSoft (2005), Siebel (2006), BEA (2008), and Sun Microsystems (2010). Oracle’s biggest acquisition was the $9.6 billion deal for the world’s largest cloud-computing software provider, Netsuite (NYSE: N), in 2016. In March 2018, Ellison founded Sensei, a wellness startup focused on hydroponic farming and holiday retreats in Lanai Island, Hawaii. In the same year, Larry Ellison became one of the board directors of Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA) after purchasing 3 million shares of the stock.
