Shapiro Capital Management is an investment manager that specializes in small- and mid-cap stocks, and we’ve covered the firm here on Insider Monkey before. In a couple new passive 13G filings with the SEC this morning, Shapiro disclosed an 8.1% stake in Bill Barrett Corporation (NYSE:BBG) and a 9.8% stake in Calgon Carbon Corporation (NYSE:CCC).
Both are new positions for the fund, and with regard to Calgon Carbon, the company also has piqued the interest of activist Jeff Smith, the manager of Starboard Value. Smith wants Calgon to undergo a larger stock buyback, an MLP conversion and more cost reductions, so it’s quite possible Shapiro is here for the ride.
