Qualcomm Unexpectedly Unveils Toq Brand Smartwatch (PentagonPost)
QUALCOMM, Inc. (NASDAQ:QCOM) unveiled on Wednesday its Toq smartwatch, similar to other smartwatches in the market including Samsung Galaxy Gear. It does not have full functionality that is available in a tablet or smartphone. It in fact syncs with the mobile devices of user to make phone calls, scan through texts and for other alerts such as WhatsApp and calendar notifications without the need of taking phones out of pocket.

Semiconductor maker Renesas Electronics Corp. has said it will sell two overseas affiliates related to system large-scale integrated circuits for mobile phones to Broadcom Corporation (NASDAQ:BRCM) of the United States for $164 million on Oct. 1. The companies, Renesas Mobile Europe Oy in Helsinki and Renesas Mobile India Pte. Ltd. in Bangalore, India, are currently under the wing of Renesas Mobile Corp., a wholly owned subsidiary of Renesas Electronics.

(NASDAQ:QCOM) CEO Paul Jacobs foresees a day when wireless networks will need more than 1,000 times more capacity than they have today, which is why the chipmaker has taken a keen interest in small cells. It’s also why QUALCOMM, Inc. (NASDAQ:QCOM) has taken a stake in small cell vendor Alcatel Lucent SA (ADR) (NYSE:ALU). Speaking at Uplinq 2013 this week, Jacobs said that the partnership is designed to encourage the entire industry to accelerate their work on small cells, which he sees as the main way wireless operators will keep up with the growing demand for data.
