NVIDIA Corporation (NVDA) To Stream Games In Full HD, Announces 4K Set-top Box Called Shield

NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) has revealed that it will launch a service to stream games in full HD 1080p alongside a new set-top box called Shield that’s capable of streaming content in 4K resolution.

According to a report from Polygon, Shield and the game streaming service called Grid will be released by NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) in May.

The Shield, being dubbed the “World’s first 4K Android TV Console,” will be priced at $199. The device, powered by the firm’s very own Tegra X1 processor, will be able to stream 4K content encoded with H.265.

NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) has also connected the Shield system to the Google entertainment ecosystem, the publication said, which gives it access to the Play store and YouTube. Shield will also be able to play games either downloaded from the Play store or Nvidia’s own store for the new product.

As for the streaming service being launched by NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) alongside its TV console, it promises streaming of up to 1080p at 60 frames per second. The company will also be reportedly launching two subscription schemes for Grid: free and premium. The chip giant is yet to announce pricing for the premium service that will supposedly be called Grid+.

The company’s Jen-Hsun Huang said that Grid will be powered by Nvidia Grid supercomputers and Amazon Web Services. The chipmaker is boasting 150 milliseconds in latency but early tests suggests that the service requires really, really fast internet. To stream 720p games, Grid may require a 5mbps to 10mbps connection. To stream games in 1080p full HD, the service may require a 30mbps internet connection.

Martin Whitman’s Third Avenue Management ended 2014 with 2.69 million NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) shares, down 10% quarter over quarter.
