Nokia Corporation (ADR) (NYSE:NOK) has not boasted about the idea, but has certainly revealed through comments made by executives that thee is an opportunity for the company to move up from the smartphone space and move into the megaPhone space (what others like to call “phablets”). By introducing a direct competitor to the Samsung Galaxy Note for a few weeks this spring, rumors were floating around that Nokia was indeed already working on such a device that might hit store shelves early in 2014. Then, about as quietly as the rumors started, they stopped.
At least temporarily. Rumors are starting to kick up again about Nokia Corporation (ADR) (NYSE:NOK) preparing a megaPhone device, though the source of the latest report is known to have a checkered history about rumors.
However, the latest talk is that Nokia is in the early stages of developing a Lumia megaPhone that would have a massive 6-inch display, which would make it significantly larger than the Galaxy Note 3 which Samsung is currently developing. If Nokia follows through on this, and no other company enters the fray, Nokia would become the first side-by-side competitor with the Galaxy Note device, which has pioneered the megaPhone sector.
Not only would this new Nokia Corporation (ADR) (NYSE:NOK) megaPhone have a 6-inch display, according to reports, but it would be a full HD display at 1080p. Now the timing of this would be interesting, as there are reports that Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) will be releasing Windows Blue in a very near future, as one of the upgrades from Windows 8 would be the 1080p HD capability. As this new operating platform also gets integrated into mobile, this megaPhone could be the first mobile device to show of the new HD capability of Windows Blue.
So what else might we know about this megaPhone?
While details overall are still sketchy simply because we are probably about seven or eight months out from actually seeing such a device – assuming it exists – but if this works out it will be an impressive megaPhone to compete against the Galaxy Note and the Android operating system.
The latest reports are suggesting that Nokia Corporation (ADR) (NYSE:NOK) would price this new device somewhere between $625 and $775 at launch, which would be pretty aggressive when it’s alongside a Galaxy Note. We don’t know whether this device would support the 41-megapixel PureView camera sensor that has been bandied about for an upcoming Nokia device, but it would seem that this device would be large enough to adequately support such a sensor.
