Microsoft Smart Watch: What is the deal with so many companies reportedly working on a smart watch? For many years, nobody wanted in on the action and now it is the next big thing. It appears that Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) is hoping to release one of these devices in the near future, perhaps before the competition is able to make its way to market.

In this article, we discuss the fact that both Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) and Apple are showing interest in developing a smart watch. Not only are both companies showing a strong interest in this, but there is a high possibility that both are already working on a concept.

According to a report by The Verge, Microsoft is pretty far along in the process as it continues to work on a prototype.

While this may be what the company is focusing on right now, it was not that long ago when this was not the case. The article goes on to cite a “reliable source” in saying that “the company has been developing a wrist-worn device for just over a year.”

We understand that Microsoft had originally planned to release a “Joule” heart rate monitor accessory for the Xbox, but the company has since decided to focus on a smartwatch instead.”

Although the Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) is said to be in the prototype stage, if the company is putting so much time into development it is safe to say that it will eventually bring a product to market. When this will happen or what it will entail is still up in the air, but there is no denying the fact that people are going to be interested.

Didn’t Microsoft try this before?

You are exactly right. Back in 2004, the company tried to get into the smart watch game with its SPOT brand. While the watches had some cool features, such as the ability to use FM radio signals to bring news to the user, the company shut things down in 2008 ad moved in another direction.
