Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) has developed a tablet computer, called Nexus, to find a foothold in the emerging tablet market to compete with Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) and its iPad. However, Google presented a smaller-sized tablet so as to not directly compete with the iPad and provide an entry-level price point for consumers. Now that Apple Inc. is pivoting to present a smaller version of the iPad, it seems that Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) is readying a direct competitor to the original iPad – in other words, a bigger tablet.
Investors in Google Inc., like billionaire fund manager Julian Robertson of Tiger Management, will certainly be following this development closely, especially seeing how a new, larger tablet will compete in the marketplace.
There have been rumors floating around that Google Inc. would be making a bigger tablet computer, and apparently some of those rumors have some confirmations behind them – to the point of a possible specific launch date and price. Sources are saying that Google Inc. will announce the arrival of the Nexus 10 tablet at an event to be held Monday. At that event, a new Nexus smartphone and new versions of the nexus 7 tablet are expected to be unveiled, and a Nexus 10 tablet was mentioned in an internal promotional video about the event.
There is no information yet as to when Google Inc. will release a Nexus 10 to the public, but the guess is that it might be in the next couple of weeks to be on store shelves alongside the Apple Inc. iPad and iPad Mini for the holiday shopping season. Also what is unknown is the expected retail price – though with the 7-inch tablet going for about $200 and the 8-inch iPad Mini retailing for $329, it’s possible that Google Inc. may have an opening to sell its bigger tablet for a similar price as the smaller Apple Inc. device. It is speculated that the new Nexus 10 would feature a 300-ppi resolution screen, which would be denser than what is expected to come from the new iPad 4 by Apple Inc..
