Google TV White Space: Google Launches TV White Space Trial in South Africa

Google TV White Space: There is no denying the fact that Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) always has something exciting going on. The search engine giant is always looking for the next big thing. The company is always looking to help others. This time around, Google is taking a closer look at what it can do for the people of South Africa.

Google is one of the hedge fund industry’s most popular stock picks, and it’s always important to pay attention to the smart money (see just why here).

According to its official company blog, Google is launching a “TV white spaces trial” in South Africa. At this point, you may not know what this means. Here is a brief excerpt that explains more:

“White spaces are unused channels in the broadcast TV spectrum. They offer the potential to improve Internet connectivity where they are most needed – in the developing world. Today we’re announcing the launch of a trial with ten schools in the Cape Town area, which will receive wireless broadband over a white space network.”

Google Inc (GOOG)As you can see, Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) is doing more than simply experimenting with this technology in South Africa. In typical fashion, the company is focusing its attention on the education sector.

While this may sound like something new, it is anything but that for the search engine company. As the blog post notes, “Google supported its first white space trial in the US in 2010.

The goal of the trial is to prove that “broadband can be offered over white spaces without interfering with licensed spectrum holders.”

With white space technology gaining steam all over the world, including the United States, it is only natural for Google to be out in front leading the charge. If everything goes as planned, the company hopes to use the technology throughout other areas of Africa.
