According to Weitz, most users are completely unaware of the practice by Google and, even if they were, do not have an easy means by which to protest. The Microsoft campaign, he claims, is simply a forum for the people to speak. It is hard, however, not to take note of the fact that Microsoft has perfectly aligned its interests with the needs of those it is purporting to protect.

Do you care?
Whether you take issue with having your email scanned or not, the reality is that Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) is doing this and the issue has become very public. It is unclear how much the functionality benefits Google search’s ability to target ads, but it will likely be discussed in coming weeks. In the meantime, as Google shares continue to tick higher, the company is quietly getting growing its business and succeeding. Even at a new high, I think Google has room to go higher.
