Cheaper Apple iPhone: When it comes to a cheaper Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone, rumors are only going to die down when the company finally releases this device or states in simple terms that it will never happen.
We have looked at this rumor from all angles in the past, trying to get a better idea of what Apple has in store for the rest of 2013.
Of course, even if Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) CEO Tim Cook said that a cheaper iPhone will never happen, there would still be people who think he is trying to cover something up.
But what about this situation? Maybe Apple is going to manufacturer a low priced smartphone in a small quantity, only making it available to consumers in a select few emerging markets.
Many people hear the phrase “cheap iPhone” and think they are going to be able to get their hands on one, no matter where they live. This is not likely to be the case, as Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) will likely make any such device only available to consumers in markets where spending a lot on technology is not common.
According a report by DigiTimes, the Cupertino based company is set to launch a low cost iPhone in small volumes.
While this source has not always been accurate in the past, it claims to have information from suppliers in Taiwan.
The report goes on to say that “Apple plans to launch an inexpensive model targeting emerging markets with initial quarterly shipments of only 2.5-3.0 million units to test market response.”
Talk about a tease. After all these years of talking about a low cost Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone, the company could manufacturer a few million and ship them off to emerging markets for testing.
While true that this could lead to more units being shipped to a larger geographic area in the future, it could make quite a few people upset.
The same source said that the “low-cost iPhone is expected to come with a 4-inch LTPS panel powered by an A6 processor, optimizing the high yield rates of mature components.”
And of course, you can expect more plastic to be used for the production of any cheaper iPhone.
Whether or not this rumor pertaining to a low cost Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone is true has yet to be determined. However, if Cupertino is going to make this move it better do so soon as other companies are immersing themselves in emerging markets with cheaper devices.
