Tim CookOf course, even if Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) CEO Tim Cook said that a cheaper iPhone will never happen, there would still be people who think he is trying to cover something up.

But what about this situation? Maybe Apple is going to manufacturer a low priced smartphone in a small quantity, only making it available to consumers in a select few emerging markets.

Many people hear the phrase “cheap iPhone” and think they are going to be able to get their hands on one, no matter where they live. This is not likely to be the case, as Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) will likely make any such device only available to consumers in markets where spending a lot on technology is not common.

According a report by DigiTimes, the Cupertino based company is set to launch a low cost iPhone in small volumes.

While this source has not always been accurate in the past, it claims to have information from suppliers in Taiwan.

The report goes on to say that “Apple plans to launch an inexpensive model targeting emerging markets with initial quarterly shipments of only 2.5-3.0 million units to test market response.”

And of course, you can expect more plastic to be used for the production of any cheaper iPhone.
