BlackBerry Ltd (BBRY) Apple Inc. (AAPL): Move over Apple Watch Blackberry Is Coming

As it turns out, BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) is not going to let Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) run away without putting up a fight in the wearable technology sector. Tom Jowitt, in an article on TechWeek europe revealed that Blackberry has recently been granted a number of patents which are directly related to wearable technology.

These patents, according to The Official Gazette of the US Patent and Trademark Office, as quoted in the article, include unlocking a smart phone with a wearable device and even a user interface for a conference calling system. BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) has definitely hatched some plans to break into the market with a bang. The question is that does this in any way hampers Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s plans?

It is difficult to answer that question now, but as far as Apple Watch is concerned, the direction that the company was taking with the wearable technology seemed different. Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s watch comprises of various apps. Of these, the health app was the one which gained considerable traction among the Apple fans.

BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) is continuing to target a different market segment, just like it did with its newly released phone, Passport. These customers are enterprise businesses and among other things Blackberry is offering to provide them with security solutions. The selection of patents that BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) has been awarded is a natural extension of these goals.

Blackberry could prove to be a phoenix rising from the ashes, if the company manages to make a successful turnaround. A smart phone geared towards handling the needs of enterprise customers, their security concerns which are the focus of other BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) products, a platform for the Internet of Things (IoT), and now most likely a dive into wearable technology is the company’s new portfolio that John Chen, BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY)’s CEO believes could do the job for both him and the company.
