After attending a technology demonstration with a small group of investors, Baird came away incrementally positive on Palantir Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ:PLTR) . Firm analyst William Power reiterated an Outperform rating on the stock with a $200.00 price target, remaining confident in the company’s ability to modernize enterprise operations and lead in agentic AI.
Ontology: The New Moat
The note from Baird has highlighted upon the power of Palantir’s ontology: the operational layer of the organization. Sitting at the heart of Palantir’s infrastructure, it allows organizations to implement and scale human-agent organizations and facilitate better decision-making at scale.

Palantir itself notes how self-hosting is an option for customers, bringing in models from multiple providers in to the AIP. AI agents can therefore reason against data and execute permitted actions within set security controls. This is the part where the value shifts for Palantir, its ontology layer, coupled with its engineers who can implement it.
The tech demo, the firm noted, has reinforced its belief that Palantir holds the ability to capitalize on the growing opportunity of open weight models and help businesses extract real ROI from agentic AI.
Another growing theme that the firm pointed out for Palantir is sovereign AI. Palantir’s most recent Bootcamp is a reflection of this flourishing theme. The company hosted its Sovereignty bootcamps in July and August, bringing in nearly 200 organizations to focus on sessions around AI sovereignty, data ownership, and more.
Due to unprecedented demand, the company had to host another bootcamp merely weeks after its first, a signal that enterprise interest in Palantir’s model is real.
Bear Case: The Moat May not remain a Moat
The bear case for Palantir in this case is that Palantir’s moat will only remain durable if competitors cannot easily replicate its combination of data integration, governance, and agentic workflows. This is why the company needs to prove that its Ontology layer isn’t easy to replicate.
Moreover, while we do note management reporting blowout second-quarter earnings on firms demanding AI sovereignty, there is no data to determine how much growth is actually coming from sovereign AI. The theme seems to be the overarching catalyst accelerating both its commercial and government segments, but there is no independent verifiable number.
The question now is whether this lock-in is durable or will it fade once rivals catch up.
Analysis and Bottom line
Recent hedge fund data from Insider Monkey’s database tracking more than a thousand hedge funds show interest for Palantir modestly declining. For the second quarter of 2026, hedge fund positions declined to 86 from 96 in the prior quarter.
The stock has a short interest of estimated 68.28 million shares, representing 3.14% of its public float. This implies bearish skepticism is limited against Palantir, and that investors are betting on the AI story.
Overall, Baird’s bullish call rests majorly on the idea that Palantir’s Ontology becomes more valuable as AI models become interchangeable. However, the debate is whether this moat will sustain and justify the premium investors are paying for it.
