Waze Apple Maps: Apple – Is the Waze Deal Dead?

Waze Apple Maps: Yesterday, we reported that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) had a strong interest in purchasing the traffic and navigation app Waze. One day later, there are reports that a deal is not imminent. In fact, it appears that the acquisition is all but dead.

In the TechCrunch story published yesterday, the indication was that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) executives were excited about the possibility of entering this space.

Here is what TechCrunch had to say today:

Does this mean Apple and Waze have never talked? Of course not. In fact, you can bet that they’ve spoken quite a bit since Waze is a partner that provides data for Apple’s mapping software. And it doesn’t even mean that they haven’t had some low-level conversations about some sort of bigger deal, maybe even an acquisition. But newsflash: big companies and small companies have these types of talks all the time. On a daily basis. And usually the end result is nothing beyond a “thanks for coming in” and sometimes even a “let’s continue talking”.

At first glance, this is a match made in heaven. Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is trailing Google Maps in the mobile maps space, and this would have been a great way for the company to make up ground.

Although you never know what will happen in the future, CNET (and their sources) are not sold on a deal anytime soon:

A source familiar with Apple’s thinking has told CNET that reports that Waze would be acquired by the iPhone maker are completely “fabricated.” The person told CNET that Apple has no plans to acquire Waze, and discussions are currently not being held between the companies.

Do you think Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is missing out on a great opportunity?
