A Bigger Geothermal Bet: What Google’s Fervo Deal Could Mean

Fervo Energy Company (NASDAQ:FRVO) has signed its largest-ever geothermal power agreement with Google, under which it will supply nearly 400 megawatts of electricity from its Cape Station project in southwestern Utah starting in 2028. The project is expected to become the world’s largest enhanced geothermal facility, with Fervo investing more than $2 billion in its development. Google also has an option to purchase an additional 600 MW, potentially bringing the total arrangement close to 1 GW by 2030.

The agreement is important because it gives Fervo a major technology customer at a time when AI data centers are creating strong demand for reliable, around-the-clock electricity. Fervo already has roughly 1 GW of power under contract, including agreements with Google, Shell, and Southern California Edison.

A Potential Breakthrough for Fervo

Fervo could benefit if hyperscalers increasingly view geothermal as part of their long-term energy strategy.

The potential additional 600 MW from Google is particularly significant. If exercised, it would give Fervo a much larger contracted pipeline and could strengthen the company’s position as a major supplier of clean baseload power.

Fervo’s model uses drilling and hydraulic-fracturing techniques adapted from the oil and gas industry to create geothermal reservoirs. The Cape Station project represents a major test of whether that approach can be deployed economically at commercial scale.

Google’s planned Utah data-center presence is not completely finalized.
