Venture Global, Inc. (NYSE:VG) announced on September 14 that it had signed a new sales and purchase agreement with China Gas Holdings for 0.5 million tons per annum (mtpa) of LNG starting in 2030. The agreement raises the Chinese natural gas operator’s total long-term commitments with VG to 2.5 mtpa, providing the American LNG operator with a visible revenue stream to expand its Louisiana portfolio.
The agreement comes ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s expected visit to Washington later this month. China was a major buyer of American LNG and purchased as much as $6.2 billion worth of shipments in 2021. However, these imports were halted in March 2025 after Beijing’s tariffs on American energy products raised costs.
Mike Sabel, CEO of Venture Global, commented:
“Venture Global is pleased to expand our LNG partnership with China Gas, a leading natural gas operator in China, supplying the country’s growing energy needs with reliable, low-cost American LNG from across our Louisiana projects.”

China Deal Adds Fuel to Venture Global’s Growth:
The deal is positive for Venture Global as it adds 0.5 mtpa of contracted volumes for two decades, giving the company greater visibility for its revenue and cash flows. It also gives the American LNG exporter greater certainty around future volumes as it brings additional capacity online in the coming years.
Venture Global is aggressively expanding its capacity to capitalize on the ongoing LNG boom, and its Plaquemines project is expected to reach phase 1 completion by the fourth quarter of 2026 and phase two by mid-2027. The company is also constructing CP2, with production expected to start in the second half of 2027. The additional volumes should significantly increase its revenue and cash flows.
The broader LNG environment also looks favorable for American LNG exporters, especially after the supply disruptions in the Middle East. Even if a peace deal is achieved, it could take years for Qatar to make repairs and bring its LNG output to pre-war levels. The supply crunch has therefore prompted customers, especially those in Asia, to seek alternative sources.
The LNG Story Faces Headwinds:
It is worth noting that the latest supply agreement does not begin until 2030 and will have little direct effect on Venture Global’s near-term earnings and cash flows. So the company will have to execute its current projects and manage substantial capital requirements before this contract becomes financially meaningful.
China’s weakening LNG demand is also a cause for concern. The country’s total LNG imports fell to a three-year low of 68.43 million tons in 2025 as it prioritized piped gas and renewable energy in its overall energy mix. China has also retained a 15% levy on US LNG, making American supplies less competitive than those from alternative producers. A weaker Chinese demand environment could therefore reduce the growth potential of the market Venture Global is targeting to serve.
A potential global LNG supply glut could also pose a threat to Venture Global. If global supply grows faster than demand, it could lead to a much weaker price environment.
Conclusion:
Venture Global’s new supply agreement with China Gas provides valuable long-term demand visibility as it expands its LNG capacity. However, with deliveries starting in 2030, the deal’s near-term financial benefits remain limited. At the same time, the weakening Chinese LNG demand and a potential global supply glut also remain key concerns.
