5 Fascinating Examples Of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs)

Ever wondered what a genetically modified organism (GMO) is? The world of experimental science is in continuous evolution and one of its milestones is represented by the appearance of such genetically modified organisms. Although you have probably already heard this term before, we assure you that there are tons of things that you still not know about, things which will surprise and shock you at the same time. Below we have compiled a list of the most fascinating details relating to genetically modified organisms.

Unlike the other genetically modified organisms in our countdown, the fabrication of this little lizard has no practical and scientific reason behind it. It was done simply to prove that it can be done. Scientists managed to find a gene in the DNA of the Umbuku, a rare species of lizards living in Africa, which once altered gave them the ability to fly. Currently, there are six flying Umbuku reported to have been created.

In an attempt to reduce the loss of trees due to paper waste, Swiss researchers have come up with a tree that grows leaves which, when left to dry, can be used in the same fashion as recycled paper. Since the first genetically modified tree has been a success, the company now grows several such organisms.

No. 3: Part Plant, Part Animal – The Fern Spider

Cross breeds between two species of animals may no longer sound very shocking. But what would you say about a genetically modified organism that is part plant part animal? The fern spider is a cross between a species of tarantula and the ponga fern. The purpose for such a concoction, you may ask? To study how spiders with camouflage devices built-in fair out in comparison to spiders without.

No. 2: Prolos Fira a.k.a The Lemur Cat

The lemur cat, a cross between a cat and a lemur, is the offspring of Chinese researchers. We all know that the Chinese are very prolific in the world of science and research; however, the reason for which this new species was breed may come as surprising. There is a tradition amongst Chinese wealthy women to show of their richness through the acquisition of exotic and rare animals, which has left scientific and medical research companies competing to find a new breed of pets.

No. 1: David v Goliath – The Monsanto Drama

The seed mogul, Monsanto, was sued by a Kansas farmer whose crops were contaminated with genetically altered wheat, originating from the aforementioned company. Considering that the US government has not approved the use of this particular GMO crop for farming, the contamination resulted in serious damages for the farmer. However, the court ultimately found in favor of Monsanto, reiterating the idea that a single man cannot withstand a giant corporation.
