5. Glory (1989)

This historical war movie stands 5th on our list of 35 best war movies on Netflix. The movie follows the first African American regiment ever in the United States Army during the Civil War. The movie shows their entire experiences from their enlistment to the formation of the regiment over the years until the regiment participates in the Second Assault on Morris Island in the year 1863. The screenplay was inspired by two different books, namely One Gallant Rush written by Peter Burchard and Lay This Laurel authored by Lincoln Kirstein. The movie was well-received; it won three Academy Awards besides earning huge profits at the box office.

The movie is set during the time period of the Vietnam War in the year 1975. Much of the fighting had made its way into Cambodia as Vietnamese forces seek refuge in the neighboring country. This resulted in the United States bombing Cambodia as well. As Communist forces drew near, local families left the city as refugees. One such family was taken prisoner and was taken to a camp where they were forced to work under inhumane conditions. A seven-year-old girl, Loung Ung, is separated from her family and is forced to train as a child soldier. The historical war drama movie was based on the fiction novel named Schindler’s Ark written by Thomas Keneally in 1982. The movie and the book follow a German industrialist named Oskar Schindler who makes it his life’s goal to save Polish-Jewish refugees from the ongoing Holocaust. In doing so, Schindler employs refugees in his factories during the course of the Second World War. The movie was a commercial success and was well-acclaimed. It won seven Academy Awards and numerous other ones. Although the movie is based on a fictional novel, it was deemed culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant and is preserved in the US National Film Registry.
