Certified translators can make a whole lot of money by freelancing, especially if they are certified. For, example, in the US, a translator who has received a certification from the American Translators’ Association can make upwards of $70,000 a year. Of course, incomes can vary greatly, according to the language or languages one can translate, as some are more in demand than others. For example, English-speaking businesses or clients will be willing to pay more for a German translation than a Spanish one.
