5. Garbage Collectors

The biggest reason why nobody wants to become a garbage collector is the social stigma attached to the profession. Garbage collectors often endure negative stereotypes, which can lead to a lack of respect from the public and peers. This lack of recognition can be demotivating and make individuals hesitant to pursue the profession. Not just that but many see garbage collection as a dead-end job with few prospects for upward mobility or skill development.

Collectors are required to lift heavy bins and bags repeatedly throughout their shift, which can lead to constant exposure to waste material and thus, the possibility of contracting diseases or encountering hazardous materials also becomes pretty high. It is one of the dirty jobs that pay well but nobody wants to do. Waste management companies like Crown Container have been reported to pay their employees salaries over $100,000, with two examples being Noel Molina and Tony Sankar. Not all garbage collectors make this much, but most earn better than high school drop-outs or even graduates, especially in places like the New York City.
