3G Capital’s Jorge Lemann is the ‘King’ of Burger King and the ‘King of Beers’

Burger King made a big move in August – the company opted to get rid of its mascot, the “King” after it was taken private by 3G Capital Inc., reports Bloomberg.

Jorge Paulo Lemann

Lemann, His 3G Capital and the King of Beers

3G Capital is a New York-based firm but it has strong ties to Brazil. Specifically, its founder is the prominent Jorge Paulo Lemann. Lemann is “one of Brazil’s most prolific dealmakers.” In addition to starting 3G Capital, Lemann founded Brazil’s first modern investment bank, Banco de Investimentos Garantia SA. That was in 1971 and he has done a lot since. His biggest transaction to date was in 2008 – the $52B takeover of Anheuser-Busch Cos. by InBev NV. InBev was formed from Belgium’s Interbrew SA and Brazil’s Cia. de Bebidas das Americas, or AmBev. The latter is a primary holding of Lemann’s. His stake in the new Anheuser-Busch InBev NV (BUD) company is valued at $8.9B.

The Richest Man in Brazil Admires Lemann

Lemann excels not just in his strategic deals. Although Lemann has been called tough, he is esteemed as a visionary as regards management culture. The richest man in Brazil, Eike Batista is an admirer of Lemann. Batista says, “Jorge Paulo created a whole management culture in Brazil that is extraordinary.” Batista explains, “He motivated employees by letting them share the profits — aggressive, but that leads to results.”
