While it was generally not considered to be a separate field initially, it has now shown enough potential to be considered as such. Biomedical engineering mostly involves research and development, which has allowed engineers in the field to achieve considerable success, some of which includes biocompatible prostheses, pharmaceutical drugs and tissue regeneration among many others.

There aren’t many biomedical engineers currently. It’s a new field with much promise but doesn’t yet have employment rates to match. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are just over 20,000 biomedical engineers in the country. Due to the lack of people available, biomedical engineering pays handsomely and has been touted by many to be one of the best jobs available currently. In fact, the aforementioned US Bureau of Labor Statistics suggested that there will be a 62% increase in the job prospects for biomedical engineers by 2020, which is a huge increase when compared to the average for all jobs, which is 14%.

We determined the cities with the highest demand for biomedical engineers. Our main criteria selected to determine the rankings were the total number of jobs in a city, since a larger number of biomedical engineering jobs indicate a greater demand for the profession, as well as the total average salary paid as paying a high amount of salary indicates greater demand for the profession as well. We traced these figures from ValuePenguin. Using multiple criteria to determine our rankings helped to cancel out the biases which are inherent in any criteria selected, and this, helps us to establish much more accurate rankings.

Here are the rankings as determined by us, starting with number 11.
