Mason Hawkins founded Tennessee based Southeastern Asset Management in 1975. Southwestern manages roughly $32 billion, with locations in Tennessee, London, Singapore, Sydney and Tokyo. Mason Hawkins received a B.A. in Finance from the University of Florida in 1970, and an M.B.A in Finance from the University of Georgia in 1971. After graduating Mason Hawkins joined as Director of Research at Atlantic National Bank until 1973, and then served as Director of Research at First Tennessee Investment Management until 1975. Then in 1975, Mason and three other partners founded Southeastern. Two partners left the firm in the 80s. Since 1989, Mason has also served as the co-portfolio manager of Longleaf Partners Small-Cap Fund. Named Longleaf after the durable longleaf pine tree that Mason’s parents raised for the family lumber business.

Mason Hawkins continues to own more than 50% of the firm, with the rest of the firm being owned by employees, making it 100% employee owned. Southeastern focuses on a long-term horizon, and utilizes a small research team of eleven analysts. Southeastern’s office is graced with a well-worn copy of Benjamin Graham's The Intelligent Investor, given to Mr. Hawkins by his father. In 2011, Southeastern’s key fund returned -2.85% while the S& P 500 managed 2.11%. However, over the longer term Southeastern has managed to outpace the market. On an annual basis for the last 20 years, Southeastern has managed a return of 10.31%, where over the same time period the S&P 500 returned 7.81% annually.
