Here’s What CEO of Tesla Motors Inc (TSLA) Thinks about Self-Driving Vehicles

Elon Musk, Chief Executive Officer of Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA), thinks that the evolution of autonomous cars is certain to happen but this change should take about two decades. A CNET article reported on the news and discussed about the point of view by CEO of Tesla Motors Inc on domination of self-driven cars in the auto industry.

“It’s not going to all transition immediately. It’s going to take awhile,” Musk said.

At NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA)’s annual GPU Technology Conference on Tuesday in San Jose, Calif., Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA)’s CEO told Nvidia’s CEO Jen-Hsen Huang in on-stage interview that it will take about two decades to replace the 2 billion cars present on roads today if 100 million new cars are produced per year.

Musk gave these comments just before Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) plans to declare a major software update on Thursday for its Model S electric cars that will improve their range before they are required to recharge, as expected. Many automotive brands like Audi, Nissan Motor Co Ltd (ADR) (OTCMKTS:NSANY) and technology companies including Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) and NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) are putting their efforts on the idea because autonomous vehicles are seen as very attractive by the automobile industry.

The concept of self-driven cars is given a significant attention and value as it promotes the safety of peoples’ lives but at present car manufacturers are only focusing on little steps to increase automation into vehicles like automatic emergency brakes and warnings about changing lanes. Companies are manufacturing more sophisticated prototype vehicles but as far as manufacturing of autonomous cars on mass scale is concerned, it’s not going to happen at this time.

“We’ll take autonomous cars for granted in a short period of time,” Musk said.

According to Chief Executive Officer of Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA), a vehicle can be controlled by a computer easily at 5 miles per hour to 10 miles per hour and it can be stopped within the range of ultrasonic sensors. If a vehicle is moving at the speed greater than 50 mph on highway, it’s also fairly simple to control because a freeway road has no complications. However, at the speed between 10 mph and 50 mph, it becomes more difficult because the vehicle needs to deal with urban environments as significant starting and stopping the vehicle is involved because of pedestrians and other objects on the road.

Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) believes in its abilities and the company knows exactly what and how to do, being dedicated towards achieving the set goals in few years, and as said by company’s CEO, it’s only a matter of time that the self-driven cars may become much safer than the human-driven cars and people starting to prefer them for the safety of their precious lives.
