Siemens AG (ADR) (SI), Caterpillar Inc. (CAT) and Westport Innovations Inc. (USA) (WPRT): Will These Big Engines Stay on Track?

Clean Energy Fuels Corp (NASDAQ:CLNE) has already partnered with Westport Innovations Inc. (USA) (NASDAQ:WPRT) in a joint marketing program geared towards the trucking industry. The program bundles Westport’s engines with long-term fuel contracts from Clean Energy. James Harger, Clean Energy’s Chief Marketing Officer, said, “We know that customers are looking for efficient solutions that will allow them to take advantage of the long term savings and environmental benefits that natural gas will bring for their fleets.” Although this program is in its nascent stages, it seems like an equally logical solution for the rail industry.

Foolish final words. . .

As a current investor in Westport Innovations Inc. (USA) (NASDAQ:WPRT) and Clean Energy Fuels Corp (NASDAQ:CLNE), I have demonstrated my belief that the trucking industry will be moving in the direction of converting to natural gas engines. But, the trucking industry may only be the beginning. With railroad companies showing interest in converting their locomotives to natural gas, I am even more confident that Westport and Clean Energy will be profitable in the long-term.
