How Is Twitter Inc (TWTR) Being Used By ISIS for Recruitment Purposes?

Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) by its nature (micro blogging platform) has played an important role in many areas of politics lately. Be it protests, revolutions, or even the latest hack of United States Central Command twitter account. During a panel discussion on Bloomberg many questions about the cyber capabilities of the Islamic State were cleared and many more were raised.

Bloomberg’s Phil Mattingly explained Cory Johnson, the impeccable timing of the hacking involving Central Command’s Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) account which seems a little unlikely to be a product of just chance. The whole episode ensued just after the President’s address on Cyber Security.

“[…] Minutes actually after he finished speaking Cory, was the first time that people started noticing that Central Command’s Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) account had been hacked by individuals or group of individuals who say that they are sympathizers with the Islamic state. They say it is part of ‘Cyber Jihad’, they are part of ‘Cyber Caliphate’. We placed a call to Central Command and no confirmation as to what is going on, but it is clear that the account has been hacked […],” said Mattingly.

ISIS using social media for recruitment purposes isn’t exactly the news here, but the way to encourage new followers to join the group in Syria is certainly a novel way. This whole Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) account hacking episode might lead people to falsely attach considerably more weight to the group’s cyber crime capabilities. However, as Cybersponse CEO, Joe Loomis pointed out during the discussion, it shouldn’t be underestimated either, before the real culprits are found.

Central Command is the headquarters for all the U.S. activity against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, and according to Mattingly it has been rumoured that the hackers put up addresses of military officers, and purported military plans for countries like North Korea and China through this Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) account. However, the actual extent of damage is still not confirmed by the department.
