Apple Inc. (AAPL) iPhone Causes Google Inc (GOOG) Glass to Malfunction, Sabotage or Coincidence?

It is no secret that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) don’t exactly like each other. Maybe “not like” is too nice a term. Maybe Apple’s late Steve Jobs said it best when he used the word “thermonuclear” in regards to Google. While virtually everyone knows these two companies don’t get along, and have a very strained relationship when it comes to mobile devices – the companies very reluctantly allow each other’s apps to be placed either on their devices or in the respective app stores – they do seem to at least co-exist for the sake of the consumers.

But is Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) potentially sabotaging itself with its new Google Glass device? The new wearable computing device, which has been a poorly-kept secret for months, since Google co-founder Sergey Brin was spotted in public wearing it, has recently been sent to app developers as one of the final steps before a public announcement and launch date is set. And as these developers are getting their hands on the $1,500 devices, they are met with an interesting wrinkle in learning about this new product – it apparently only works in an Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone-free environment.

Could the iPhone be Google’s kryptonite? And could this be an opening for Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) to develop its own wearable device that actually works across all platforms and with all devices? Interesting theory, but we digress.

Reportedly, when Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) Glass is used alongside an Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone, the eyewear loses text-messaging ability and cannot get directions via GPS. The Google Glass device – at least this initial developer version – would need to be connected to an Android-powered smartphone with the MyGlass app in order to have full functionality of GPS and text messaging. The app is currently not available for iOS, but other Google Glass functions work as they’re supposed to with iPhones. The company so far has not said if or when a MyGlass app would be available for iOS.

But it’s clear that Google has found its kryptonite. Can it find the antidote in time for public display?
