Apple Inc. (AAPL) App Store, Google Inc (GOOG) Play: Portable Gaming Update

Apps, apps, and more apps. This is what smartphone and tablets are all about. This is what gets people excited. And that is why Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) are putting so much time into this part of their business.

While the Apple App Store continues to garner the most attention from outsiders, you cannot afford to overlook the progress Google Play has made as of late.

Games Lead Growth for Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL), Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG)

As of late, gaming is hot. Consumers are looking to spend money on games or iOS App Store and Google Play, and will not stop at anything to get their hands on the best apps.

App Annie, in partnership with International Data Corporation (IDC), recently released its quarterly App Annie & IDC Portable Gaming Report. There is some very interesting information in this report, showing the growth experienced by both app stores as well as the power of gaming.

Once you take the time to download the full report, you will be presented with a variety of information. Most interesting is the fact that games continue to lead app store growth through the second quarter of 2013.

Right now, it appears that both companies would be best off focusing a lot of time and energy on this sector of their respective app stores in the quarters to come.

With roughly 40 percent of downloads in both app stores being games, it is easy to see that this is what consumers are looking for at the present time.

Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) Play spending was driven by games more so than Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS, however, both saw an uptick in action.

One note of interest that may be overlooked by others is this: Google Play game revenue continued to be generated primarily from Japan, South Korea, and the Asia-Pacific.

Gaming is a big deal. We don’t have to look any further than the hoopla surrounding the Xbox One to see that this is true. When you combine gaming with smartphones and tablets, you have an entirely different market. And that is where Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) continue to battle.

These hedge fund managers continue to like how Cupertino is positioning itself: David Einhorn, Jeffrey Edwards, Christopher Hansen, Mark Diker, and Stuart Peterson.
