Will SanDisk (SNDK) Ride the Next Wave of AI-Driven NAND Demand?

SanDisk Corporation (NASDAQ:SNDK) is positioned to benefit from the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure as hyperscalers increase spending on training and inference workloads. The opportunity is particularly significant as NAND flash storage increasingly moves beyond its traditional role as a commoditized component and becomes a more important layer of AI infrastructure.

As investors assess the long-term implications of the AI storage boom, questions are also emerging about SanDisk’s future supply commitments and whether current demand levels can support pricing power. For more on that debate, see: SanDisk (SNDK) Has Signed Away Two-Thirds of Next Year’s Output. Can the AI Storage Boom Keep Paying?

The continued buildout of AI data centres is driving demand for high-capacity solid-state storage solutions. SanDisk expects the NAND market to continue expanding rapidly, estimating industry revenue will exceed $300 billion in calendar 2026.

The opportunity could expand further as AI models become larger and inference workloads increase, creating greater requirements for data storage and access. SanDisk’s data center business is already benefiting from this trend. In fiscal Q2 2026, data center revenue increased 64% sequentially, reflecting strong demand from customers building AI infrastructure.

Will SanDisk Corporation (SNDK) Ride the Next Wave of AI-Driven NAND Demand?

SanDisk’s advanced 3D NAND architecture allows it to deliver high-density storage solutions for cloud and AI applications. The company is also developing High Bandwidth Flash (HBF), which could expand NAND’s role beyond conventional solid-state drives by addressing the increasing bandwidth requirements of AI computing systems.

AI Could Reshape the NAND Opportunity

The potential shift toward NAND as a more strategic component of AI infrastructure could allow SanDisk to capture greater value from its technology and manufacturing capabilities.

On September 21, Rosenblatt initiated its Buy rating on SanDisk Corporation with a $2,400 price target, arguing that AI compute platforms are creating a significant opportunity for NAND flash as an increasingly critical component of AI infrastructure.

The broader thesis is that AI growth is not only increasing compute requirements but also creating substantial demand for the storage, movement, and retrieval of data used by AI systems. If this trend continues, SanDisk could benefit from an expanding enterprise SSD market and new applications for NAND technology.

However, the NAND opportunity also comes with meaningful risks.

NAND Pricing Remains a Key Risk

Despite strong AI-related demand, NAND remains a cyclical industry in which pricing is heavily influenced by supply and demand. A significant increase in industry capacity, weaker-than-expected AI infrastructure spending, or slower enterprise SSD demand could pressure average selling prices and weigh on SanDisk’s margins.

SanDisk Corporation’s estimate that the NAND market could reach $500 billion in revenue in calendar 2027 also depends on continued investment in AI infrastructure. If hyperscalers moderate capital spending or improvements in AI efficiency reduce storage requirements, actual NAND demand could fall below current expectations.

Competition represents another risk. SanDisk competes with major memory manufacturers, including Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron, while Chinese manufacturers are also expanding their NAND capabilities. Increased industry capacity could intensify pricing pressure even if long-term storage demand remains strong.

Hedge Fund Positioning

Institutional interest in SanDisk Corporation remained strong in the second quarter as investors positioned for the company’s exposure to the AI-driven storage cycle. According to Insider Monkey’s database, the number of hedge funds holding the stock increased to 128 in the second quarter from 114 in the first quarter.

Situational Awareness LP was among the funds increasing its position, raising its stake by 119% to $5.67 billion. By comparison, Arrowstreet Capital reduced its position by 24% to $4.93 billion.

Bearish positioning also declined. Short interest fell to approximately 5.62 million shares as of September 15 from 7.68 million shares as of August 14, representing short interest of approximately 3.84%.

The Verdict

SanDisk Corporation’s growth opportunity increasingly extends beyond traditional NAND demand as AI infrastructure drives greater requirements for storage capacity, bandwidth, and data accessibility. Strong data center growth and the development of technologies such as High Bandwidth Flash could provide additional avenues for the company to participate in the expanding AI infrastructure market.

At the same time, investors should consider the cyclical nature of NAND pricing, the possibility of slower AI infrastructure spending, and intensifying competition. The long-term opportunity therefore depends not only on higher storage demand but also on SanDisk’s ability to translate that demand into sustainable pricing, margins, and market-share gains.
