Rubrik (RBRK) Has Outperformed the Market in 2026. Is the Rally Sustainable?

Rubrik Inc. (NYSE:RBRK) has delivered market-beating returns in 2026. However, the biggest concern for investors is whether margin enhancement will be achieved soon enough to justify the stretched multiple. The company’s rich valuation following its bullish run is being offset by sizable GAAP losses. However, the topline growth and cash flow generation remain attractive. However, any slowdown in the future could expose it to a sharp pullback.

Cybersecurity Contender Betting on AI-Agent Protection

Rubrik has been one of the standout performers in 2026, across the cybersecurity and data protection segment. The stock now has a $23.96 billion market capitalization after closing at $118.58 on October 2. It has jumped 62% on year-to-date basis and has outpaced the S&P 500 by more than 3x over the last 52 weeks. Despite notable topline growth, the company is still striving toward profitability.

The company aims to address emerging security issues linked with AI developments by expanding beyond data protection. It plans to tap into the identity security and AI-agent protection space, with ambitions to become a security layer that enterprises can rely on.

Path to Profitability Is the Real Test

The bull case for Rubrik revolves around its topline momentum, backed by robust demand for its data security and cyber resilience suite. The company has generated $1.54 billion in revenue over the last twelve months, following a 37.90% year-over-year topline expansion during the second quarter of fiscal 2027. During the second quarter, it grew the subscription ARR by 33% compared to the corresponding period last year, standing at $1.66 billion. The subscription revenue also saw a jump of 37%.

However, profitability metrics appear far less encouraging. Over the prior twelve months, Rubrik’s operating margin has stood at -18.3% and net margin also remained in negative territory at -16.50%. The company continues to lose money amid large sales-related expenses, marketing spend, and R&D expenditures. With the stock currently carrying a premium valuation, investors would want to see such negative margins shrink going forward.

Here is what Jim Cramer thinks about Rubrik.

Generating Cash Despite Losses

The company’s $1.15 billion of total debt seems reasonable given the scale of Rubrik’s cash flows. It has delivered $337 million in operating cash flows over the last twelve months, along with along with roughly $286 million in free cash flow. Such impressive figures despite substantial GAAP losses point to its subscription-based model, which involves upfront payments and non-cash expenses for the business. The cash flow position hints at Rubrik’s flexibility to keep investing in growth without depending on outside funding.

The company is also collaborating with other players to address critical cybersecurity challenges in this day and age. Its strategic engagement with CrowdStrike brings together Rubrik’s Identity Resilience and CrowdStrike’s Falcon Next-Gen Identity Security, to offer real-time threat detection and correlation capabilities. This would enable customers to investigate and recover from threats in hours instead of days.

Institutional Sentiment

Data tracked across 1,000+ hedge funds by Insider Monkey reveals that the number of smart money managers invested in the company has dropped a bit. As per 13F filing data for Q2 2026, a total of 44 hedge funds held positions in the stock compared to 46 by the end of the first quarter.

As per Yahoo Finance database, BlackRock is the largest institutional investor with 9.99 million shares, representing 5.97% of outstanding shares. Other notable institutional names include AQR Capital Management and FMR that hold 5.94% and 5.50% of outstanding shares, respectively.

Short interest in the stock indicates moderately bearish sentiment. A short float of 8.32% shows some skepticism but not a heavily crowded bearish bet.

Rubrik’s growth and cash generation remain compelling, but the stock’s premium valuation leaves little room for execution missteps if margin improvement doesn’t keep up.
