Pan American Silver (PAAS) Updates its Reserve Base. How Much Growth Reflects Better Mines?

Pan American Silver Corp. (NYSE:PAAS) replaced more than 100% of silver extracted, but acquired ounces, price assumptions and idle Escobal reserves complicate the headline. Grades, development costs and profitable production will determine value.

Pan American Silver Corp. (NYSE:PAAS) reported on September 16 that its June 30, 2026 proven and probable reserves contained approximately 511.1 million ounces of silver and 6.3 million ounces of gold. Management said operations replaced more than 100% of silver extracted, while the acquired Juanicipio interest further enlarged the reserve base.

The 44% attributable interest in Juanicipio accounts for 58.3 million silver ounces, or approximately 11.4% of the reported silver total. Those estimates carry an April 30, 2025 effective date. The headline therefore combines reserve replacement at existing operations with acquired inventory.

Bull Case

Pan American Silver Corp. showed exploration progress at its operating mines. La Colorada added 3.5 million silver ounces to proven and probable reserves after mining depletion, supported by discoveries and extensions of mineralized zones.

Huaron, San Vicente and Cerro Moro added another 1.9 million, 1.8 million and 1.6 million silver ounces, respectively, net of depletion. Together with La Colorada, those disclosed additions total 8.8 million ounces. The gains show that several operations replenished more metal than they extracted.

For shareholders, additions around established mines can be especially valuable. Existing processing plants, roads and operating teams could support new mining areas and reduce the infrastructure required to develop them. Longer mine lives could spread those costs across more production and sustain future cash generation.

Reserve replacement is the strongest part of the update because it supports the business beyond the current production schedule.

Bear Case

The additions also reflect changing economics. At Huaron, San Vicente and Cerro Moro, higher assumed metal prices helped expand reserves alongside exploration, drilling or development. Higher prices can lower the cutoff grade, allowing material with less metal per tonne to qualify economically. Reserve growth therefore does not automatically establish better grades or lower production costs.

Juanicipio’s contribution requires its own assessment. The acquired interest expands the portfolio, but its value depends on the cash it generates relative to the capital committed to the acquisition. Its inclusion does not measure exploration productivity at the previously owned mines.

Another major distinction is availability. Escobal holds 264.5 million silver reserve ounces, approximately 51.8% of the consolidated total, but remains on care and maintenance. Its operating license is suspended pending the required Indigenous consultation process. Those ounces provide potential future value without currently contributing to production.

Pan American Silver Corp. also reports contained metal before metallurgical recoveries. Investors must consider recovery rates, development spending, and operating costs when translating the inventory into expected earnings.

Hedge Fund Sentiment

The filings available so far reflect positions held before Pan American Silver Corp. reported its September reserve update. Insider Monkey’s database showed 41 hedge funds holding Pan American Silver Corp. at the end of 2Q2026, down from 50 funds three months earlier.

Conclusion

Pan American Silver Corp. demonstrated encouraging reserve replacement, particularly at La Colorada. The investment case strengthens as those additions support longer mine lives and attractive returns on development spending. Mine-level grades, price sensitivity, recovery rates, and conversion into profitable production will determine how much value the larger reserve base delivers to shareholders.
