Micron (MU): Can Data Center Storage Become Another Durable Profit Engine?

Micron Technology looks attractively valued against its storage peer. Better SSDs strengthen the case if margins and cash generation endure beyond favorable memory pricing.

Micron Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ:MU) makes memory chips and storage products used in data centers, phones, and computers. Its 245TB 6600 ION solid-state drive offers another way to serve growing artificial-intelligence workloads. As demand for AI infrastructure supports interest in semiconductor companies, Micron is worth examining alongside the 10 Most Active Blue Chip Stocks to Buy Right Now.

Micron Technology, Inc. trades at 7x forward P/E. That valuation looks attractive against expected earnings, but requires continued profit expansion. Durable storage margins would strengthen the case; a temporary shortage premium would offer less protection.

Customer Savings Need to Become Supplier Profits

Micron Technology, Inc. estimates that its drive can deliver equivalent raw storage capacity using 82% fewer racks than hard drives. Lower space, power, and cooling requirements can reduce customers’ operating costs, supporting pricing beyond the value of raw memory.

Customer testing, integrated software and reliable operation can encourage repeat orders. Competitors can still narrow the performance gap. The advantage lasts when customers’ savings exceed the price premium and manufacturing costs leave an attractive profit.

The Earnings Gap Requires Much Higher Profits

Micron Technology, Inc. carries a 24x trailing P/E, based on reported historical earnings, versus 7x forward P/E. Analysts expect adjusted EPS of approximately $176 in fiscal 2027 and $206 in fiscal 2028.

Fiscal 2026 reported EPS was $74.33, against adjusted EPS of $75.52. Adjustments included stock compensation, patent-license charges, and debt-prepayment losses. Their relatively small effect shows that the lower forward multiple depends mainly on substantially higher profits, rather than removing those expenses.

Micron Technology, Inc. benefits from tight supply as well as product improvements. Fourth-quarter prices for NAND, the memory that stores data, increased approximately 30% sequentially, against roughly 10% growth in bit shipments. Revenue across the data center SSD portfolio approached $10 billion. Separating product differentiation from an industry upturn matters because lower memory prices could compress earnings even as storage volumes grow.

Past Multiples Put the Focus on Earnings Durability

Micron Technology, Inc. recorded forward P/Es of 11x in 2024 and 9x in 2025. Those observations capture earlier earnings expectations. The investment case now rests on whether stronger profits can endure as manufacturers expand supply. A low multiple can accompany unusually high cyclical earnings, making sustained cash generation essential.

The company generated $62 billion of adjusted free cash flow in fiscal 2026 after $27 billion of net capital spending. Management projects approximately $25 billion of net spending in the first half of fiscal 2027 alone, with more in the second half. These spending figures include government incentives. Investors must judge whether storage growth turns into cash after sustained factory investment.

Faster Peer Growth Explains Some of the Discount

Micron Technology, Inc. trades at 7x forward P/E, compared with 6x for SanDisk Corporation (NASDAQ:SNDK), its closest listed NAND-storage peer. The peer’s trailing P/E is 20x. Both forward multiples use fiscal 2028 estimates, with August and June year-ends, respectively. Expected adjusted EPS growth for that year is 17% versus 24%, supporting some premium for the peer.

DRAM, used as working memory, supplied 73% of fourth-quarter revenue at Micron Technology, Inc.. Its fiscal 2026 adjusted gross margin of 81% exceeded the peer’s 72%, reflecting different product mixes rather than a direct SSD-margin comparison. Net cash of $68 billion provides investment flexibility, although $13 billion of customer deposits are repayable when purchase commitments are met. Readers considering 10 Most Active Blue Chip Stocks to Buy Right Now should weigh sustainable cash returns alongside low earnings multiples.

Conclusion

Micron Technology, Inc. looks attractively valued at 5x forward P/E, supported by strong cash generation and a discount to its storage peer. Sustaining that judgment requires repeat orders, competitive manufacturing costs, and cash earnings that cover expanding investment. Preserving margins when NAND prices normalize will determine how much of today’s profitability deserves lasting value.
