Mattel Inc. (NASDAQ:MAT) soared as much as 36 percent on Thursday as investors gobbled up its shares after reports that Authentic Brands Group is setting its sights on the company for $6 billion. The stock pared gains toward the end of the session, finishing just up by 18.8 percent at $15.04 apiece.
The rally was driven primarily by an exclusive Wall Street Journal report that Authentic Brands offered to take over Mattel Inc. for $6 billion.
The value, however, was just secondary. Investor interest appeared to have been sparked by the potential acquisition price of $20, which marked a 58 percent premium over its $12.66 closing price on Wednesday, September 30, before the buzz.
Thursday’s closing price, however, indicated that the offer still carried a premium of 33 percent, reflecting investor caution and leaving room for upside until the two parties confirm the deal.
However, a spokesperson for Mattel Inc. who requested not to be named said in an interview with CNBC that they “do not comment on market rumors or speculation” as a matter of company policy.

CEO Leaves for Paramount Skydance
The takeover reports followed Mattel Inc.’s leadership changes on the same day, with Roger Lynch—current board member and independent lead director—taking over as chairman of the company effective tomorrow, October 2.
He will also assume the role of CEO on or before November 2, 2026, as Ynon Kreiz is set to step down also on Friday. Kreiz will move to Paramount Skydance as co-CEO amid its ongoing $110 billion merger with Warner Bros.
Lynch has been a board member of Mattel Inc. since 2018 and brings extensive leadership experience spanning media, technology, and consumer businesses. He served as CEO of Condé Nast since 2019, where he led the global media company and its portfolio of influential brands, unified global operations, as well as expanded and tailored IP monetization opportunities for its brands.
Buy Reco Maintained
Investment firm UBS reiterated its buy call and $28 price target on shares of Mattel Inc. following the company’s leadership announcement, allaying concerns about transition strategies, thanks to Lynch’s involvement with the toymaker since 2018.
However, it noted that the announcement could introduce uncertainties into investor sentiment amid the challenging macroeconomic environment, rising rates, and a second-half outlook heavily weighted toward the fourth quarter.
Hedge Fund Conviction Weakens in Q2
Institutional investors appeared to have weakened in the second quarter of the year, with their committed capital showing a decline despite the increase in the number of hedge fund holders.
Data from Insider Monkey showed that 41 hedge funds held positions in the stock during the period, up modestly from 40 in the first quarter of the year.
However, combined holdings dipped to $913 million from $917.87 million, signaling that existing investors are reducing exposure.
What’s Next?
Investors are expected to monitor the situation as the deal remains speculative. Until further details emerge, the stock is likely to experience sideways trading or face downward pressure as traders take advantage of profits from the recent surge.
